What to gift someone who likes wine

When it comes to buying a present for a wine connoisseur, of course one of their favourite bottles will always go down well. But sometimes, it's nice to also think outside the (wine) box too.

That could be a case of expertly curated bottles that will introduce them to a new favourite, a wine subscription that just keeps on giving, or a vintage blend that’s made for special nights. Adding some stylish glasses or a chic bottle stop is always a nice idea too, which is why we've included some of our editor's picks below.

Fortnum & Mason The Wine Quartet Wicker

Editor’s Choice
The Wine Quartet Wicker

The beauty of gifting a Fortnum’s hamper is that they’re left with a keepsake wicker basket, which will be treasured long after the last cork has been popped.

With four luxury wines included, there's plenty to get excited about, and the accessible selection covers all bases with two whites and reds, while also highlighting some hidden gems.

Highlights include the vibrant alvarinho (a dry white wine from Portugal, full of minerality), as well as the Argentinian malbec which will pair with a range of red meat.

Addison Ross Bow Tie Corkscrew Pink & Green

Bow Tie Corkscrew Pink & Green

Addison Ross may be better known for its salt and pepper mills, but we're very excited by the launch of its first-ever corkscrew collection. The tactile design is available in five colours, including this gorgeous partnership with Amie Wine – which just so happens to be the winner of our best rosé taste test!

Ouverture London Evoking Sancerre Candle

Evoking Sancerre Candle

Not all wine gifts need to be imbibed. This soy wax candle – created by wine writer and broadcaster Aleesha Hansel – has been designed to smell just like a crisp glass of Sancerre.

Fresh, green and citrus-y, the home scent comes in a beautiful engraved brass holder. For red and rosé fans, there are also Margaux and Provence versions.

Gooseberry Bush Sauvignon Blanc Limited Edition Magnum

UK Taste Approved(GH)
Sauvignon Blanc Limited Edition Magnum

Score: 88/100

For those who love a good bottle of sauvignon blanc, this affordable magnum from South Africa is one of Laithwaite's most popular whites.

It steers slightly away from traditional sauvignon, focusing more on the tart green apples, gooseberries and light grassiness, while the tropical fruit notes come in later on the palate to give it a great juicy mouthfeel. It's refreshing, pairing well with shellfish.

Abel & Cole Cheese & Red Wine Club

Cheese & Red Wine Club

Score: 87/100

Abel & Cole sources its excellent products from quality producers who align with its sustainability efforts. And we think its cheese and wine pairing would make a lovely gift. You can either order it as a one-off, or add it to your regular delivery for a partner you live with.

This organic Sicilian Purato Nero d’Avola has jammy flavours of strawberries and cherries and a great meaty finish. Each delivery brings a different cheese (we tried a salty British alpine-style one) which had a rich, full flavour and plenty of grassy depth.

Cuvee Rosé Ribbons Champagne

Score: 81/100

A bottle of champagne will always be gratefully received, and LP’s full-bodied rosé is rich and decadent, making it a perfect gift for big celebrations.

Each year, the brand presents its cuvee in a new “robe”, and this year’s beautiful, metal ribbon case negates the need for a gift bag. Cheers!

Cheese Selection & Wine Wicker Hamper

Score: 85/100

This Welsh cheese maker is a firm favourite at the Good Housekeeping Institute, and this generously-sized wicker hamper has all the key essentials to make a top-tier cheeseboard. There's four waxed wheels, which include some of its bestsellers, such as the Black Bomber, a bold and creamy mature cheddar with little tangy crystals.

There’s also a delicious rarebit cheese bake, three tangy chutneys, crackers, handmade Willie's Cacao chocolates from Devon for the sweet-tooths, and a bottle of Montes Colchagua Carmenère. There's even a slate to display it on too – all for less than £100.

Drinkwell Lifestyle Red Wine Case

UK Taste Approved(GH)
Lifestyle Red Wine Case

Score: 81/100

A case of new and interesting wines is always going to be a winner with any oenophile, but what sets this box apart is they're all sugar- and gluten-free.

Our testers particularly enjoyed the El Ninot de Paper Tinto, which they said was a perfect example of an easy drinking Spanish blend, packed with cranberries and light black peppery notes. Meanwhile, the Boundary Line Shiraz had stewed plum flavours and a great balance of sweet, acidic and bitter notes.

The Wine Club 12 Bottle Mix

Score: 81/100

All you need to do with this monthly subscription is choose how many bottles you want and whether you prefer red, white or a mixed case. Then the rest of the hard work is left down to the Laithwaites team.

We tried a mixed case and our testers particularly liked the juicy bottle of Corsiero Nero Puglia, which had notes of pomegranate and redcurrants, and the Mussel Pot Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc that had bold fruits and well balanced acidity.

Hambledon Hambledon Classic Cuvée NV - 12 bottles

If champagne feels too obvious, opt for a bottle of English Sparkling wine instead, which arguably feels a little more exciting right now. This one is made in the same traditional method, with fresh green apple and thirst-quenching citrus, alongside notes of toasted brioche and almond from lees aging.

A reliable bottle stopper is an essential piece of kit, as no one wants a bottle of the best champagne to lose its fizz in the fridge when there's still half of it left.

Using a small lever, this one pressurises the bottle so it keeps its bubbles. It also bears the trademark quality Le Creuset finish.

How we select wine gifts

best tequila

Our food and drink editor, Stacey Smith, has included a range of gifts that she'd be delighted to receive herself. She's tried many of the suggestions personally, while others have been cherry picked from the Good Housekeeping Institute's extensive food and drink taste tests.

For those recommendations, a panel of WSET-accredited testers tried a range of different wine gifts. Each item was assessed on aroma and flavour, and our panel was looking for high quality items that were well presented across subscription boxes, mixed cases and premium bottles. You’ll find their top picks marked with a GHI Approved logo.
