Luckily, the experts at the Good Housekeeping Institute have done the hard work, trying a wide range of grapes from various regions, to help you stock up in style.

We’ve also rounded up the best champagne for French fizz fans, and you’ll find your beloved Provence blush in our rosé round-up.

Best French wine 2023

Why are French wines considered the best?

Despite the wine aisles now offering vino from around the world — including Greek and English — France's reputation still reigns supreme. This is partly down to terroir, with various styles produced across hundreds of appellations. From Burgundy to Bordeaux, Champagne to Châteauneuf-du-Pape, these classic styles are renowned for their quality.

How we test French wine

As part of the Good Housekeeping Institute’s annual Wine Awards, our panel of 10 WSET-accredited experts and consumers sampled 26 bottles of French wine.

They considered a range of styles, looking for wines that were a good representation of their grape variety. Each was assessed on its complexity, flavour and finish. Here’s our pick of the best French wine for 2023.

Harvey Nichols’ own-brand range is a treasure trove of quality wine, and as the name suggests this is made from grapes grown in a slightly superior area of Bordeaux. The quality shows, with jammy fruit, layers of savoury oak, a hint of smoke and a sweet cassis finish.

Another gem from the range is the lively and refreshing Harvey Nichols Chablis which was awarded 78/100 by our panel.

Domaine Michel Girard Sancerre

Domaine Michel Girard Sancerre

Score: 74/100

This wine is a true reflection of the Loire’s terroir. Testers loved the vibrant palate, with notes of lemongrass, flint and lashings of minerality. It’s another excellent pairing for spicy food, or alternatively, goat's cheese. However, we’d avoid serving it ice cold, as that will only suppress its more nuanced notes.
