The best portable projectors for battery-powered movie nights
Our top picks for big-screen entertainment, whether inside or outdoors…

The best portable projectors allow you to watch your favourite TV shows, films and online content virtually anywhere. Bright, powerful and exceedingly portable, the latest battery-powered projectors can move easily from room to room, out into the garden, and even come with you on holiday.
We’ve focused on finding the most user-friendly portable projectors whatever your budget, and most, if not all, boast a host of connections including Bluetooth, HDMI and wifi, which makes streaming from services such as Netflix, Disney Plus, Amazon Prime Video and YouTube quick and surprisingly simple. We also have a separate roundup of the best mains-powered home cinema projectors if you prefer.
Every model on this list is actually portable (they all weigh under 2kg) and run on built-in batteries or, in the case of the Samsung Freestyle and Xgimi MoGo 3 Pro, work with a neat battery accessory. It’s worth noting that many also work with compatible power banks or portable power stations.

How the GH Tech Team tests portable projectors
We binge-watched classic films and box sets to help us decide which new portable projects are worth your money. It’s a tough job, but we’re professionals. Joking aside, we’ve spent countless hours getting acquainted with what you can expect from the latest batch of portable projectors.
We’ve installed apps, snapped many QR codes, downloaded software updates and meticulously set up each projector with you in mind. Usability is essential, and we need to know that everyone in the house can switch it on, point it at the wall, and watch with minimal fuss.
Performance and picture quality are key factors, but we’re keen to stress these are not high-powered cinema-style projectors or the best OLED TV screens. That said, if a design purports to be bright enough for outdoor use, we tested the claims… and we did so while it was freezing outside too.

Chris Haslam is an award-winning UK-based journalist with over 20 years of experience. He specialises in consumer technology, smart home, audio, outdoors, fitness and sustainability, but in truth, there’s very little he hasn’t reviewed over the years.
As well as writing guides and reviewing tech for Good Housekeeping, he is Contributing Editor for Wired magazine and Wired.com, while also writing for a broad range of titles including a monthly audio reviews column for BBC Music magazine, the world’s largest classical music title. He also contributes regularly to Livingetc, Ideal Home, and Expert Reviews. His house is, unsurprisingly, chock full of gadgets, but he still hasn’t forgiven the robot vacuum for ripping out the broadband cable.
Over the years, Chris has written hundreds of expert “how-to” guides and a dizzying number of product reviews. Highlights include testing tents in the McLaren supercar monsoon bad weather testing chamber, trialling winter sports technology in Colorado, writing features on stand-up and treadmill desks, and even testing exoskeletons that help you hike up hills. He spends too long arguing with voice assistants, and if you live close by, you’ve almost certainly been asked to lend your home for testing robot vacuums, doorbells and security systems.
