If you’re looking to make your home a little more high-tech, investing in a smart speaker is a good place to start – and Alexa users will definitely want to take advantage of this limited-time deal.

As part of Amazon's second Prime Day event of the year (8-9 October), you can get the 5th generation Echo Dot for just £22.99, reduced from £54.99. That’s a huge 58% discount, and it applies to all three colour options!

The best news is that, unlike most of the Prime Big Deal Days discounts, this one is both not limited to Prime members and a bit longer lasting. It's available to all Amazon shoppers (although Prime members can grab even more tech discounts in the sale) and running until 16 October at 8:55 am, while stocks last!

It's worth grabbing because it's a great compact speaker that fits into the palm of your hand (it's about the size of a grapefruit and only slightly heavier than one too), so it’s unobtrusive and won’t take up too much space on your shelf.

On test, I've found the petite speaker super easy to use and Alexa works very well – it has no trouble picking up voices in a kitchen with a pan boiling on the stove and an extraction fan running. I think it’s a good one to keep handy while you’re cooking, so you don’t have to come away from the stove to change the music while making dinner or set a timer while the pasta boils, for example.

What can it do? As well as giving you access to streaming services such as Amazon Music, Spotify and Apple Music, it answers questions and you can also use it as a hub to control other smart devices such as lighting, cameras and thermostats, too.

On the less positive side, the sound isn’t quite as room-filling if you have a large space, but it is a small speaker after all. And at this price, you can stock up on several to pad out the sound, it works as a multi-room audio setup that'll keep all the music in sync too!

Overall, I see this as a great and inexpensive way to make your home a little smarter – and we only see the prices go this low during sales, so it’s a great time to invest. Trust me, these offers don't appear every week and it wasn't even at this low of a price during Amazon's Prime Day sales in July.
