If you thought the pain ended in the delivery room, think again. Unfortunately, sore, cracked, and sometimes even bleeding nipples can be part of the breastfeeding journey. Oh, the joys of motherhood!

As you work on finding the perfect latch for you and your baby, a quality nipple cream can be a lifesaver. It soothes and moisturises, helps to alleviate inflammation and dryness, and creates a protective barrier to promote quick healing.

There are many types of relieving products available, from soothing creams to shielding reusable cups. With the help of over 85 mums – or approximately 170 nipples – the Good Housekeeping Institute tested the best for your breasts.

See our winners at a glance below, and read on for our full reviews and advice from Louise Broadbridge, aka the Honest Midwife.

How we test nipple creams

With the help of over 85 parent panel members, we tested nine brands of nipple creams over two weeks. We asked them to assess the products on their ease of use, design, performance and overall satisfaction when using them.

Testers assessed each product for its design and how easy it was to dispense. They were also asked for feedback on how well the cream absorbed, its soothing properties, and its ability to heal and protect cracked skin.

Lansinoh Lanolin Nipple Cream

Lanolin Nipple Cream
Now 16% Off

Score: 87/100

Lansinoh has been nourishing nipples for over forty years. Hard-working lanolin replenishes painful dryness and adds a layer of moisture to prevent further cracking. It’s also an emollient, which prevents water loss from the area.

Our mum testers were impressed, with many reporting it healed cracking overnight. It comes in a convenient squeezy tube, and there’s no need to wipe it off before the next feed as it’s tasteless, odourless, and free from harmful ingredients.

Weleda Nipple Balm

UK Approved(Esquire,Red,HB,GH,Country Living,Prima)
Nipple Balm

Score: 83/100

Weleda’s nipple balm also contains ultra-healing lanolin, as well as organic calendula extract. This skin-friendly, naturally antiseptic ingredient soothes and heals and is gentle on sensitive areas.

A little goes a long way with this tiny tube, and one mum liked how easy and discreet it was to apply while out and about. What’s more, it absorbs quickly and doesn’t feel sticky on the skin.

Green People Organic Babies Mum & Baby Rescue Balm

UK Approved(Esquire,Red,HB,GH,Country Living,Prima)
Organic Babies Mum & Baby Rescue Balm

Score: 81/100

Our panel of mums loved this buttery balm, which soothed aching nipples and doubled as a nappy cream for babies. In fact, it restores and heals dry, cracked skin anywhere on the body and is even effective on eczema-prone skin.

It's packed with nourishing ingredients, such as calendula and shea butter to soothe and heal inflammation, while hemp acts as an emollient, working alongside beeswax to lock in hydration.

Although it may not be as convenient as a squeezy tube for on-the-go use, it is perfect for keeping at home to provide extra comfort.

Lansinoh Silver Nipple Cups

UK Approved(Esquire,Red,HB,GH,Country Living,Prima)
Silver Nipple Cups

Score: 80/100

Cream isn’t the only cure for sore nipples. These clever nipple cups are a fantastic reusable alternative, scoring full marks for design.

Silver is naturally antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, and anti-fungal, which helps to soothe and protect sore nipples – and many enjoyed the relief felt from the cold metal. They work by creating a moist environment that promotes faster wound healing while preventing infection and irritation, and act as a physical barrier against friction from clothes. They’re lightweight and fit discreetly into nursing bras, simply add a drop of breast milk to each cup and stick them on.

Kit & Kin Natural Nipple Balm

UK Approved(Esquire,Red,HB,GH,Country Living,Prima)
Natural Nipple Balm

Score: 75/100

Co-founded by Baby Spice Emma Bunton, the Kit & Kin range aims to protect and care for your skin without any harmful or irritating ingredients.

Their lightweight balm features skin-friendly arnica extract, a natural antibacterial and anti-inflammatory agent that aids tissue repair. Packed with flaxseed, coconut, and sunflower oils, it delivers essential omega acids to enhance suppleness and soothe dry skin.

Many testers praised its fast absorption, including one who remarked, “It felt like my skin was being nourished by the good stuff.”

My Little Coco Baby Mama Soothing Nipple Balm

UK Approved(Esquire,Red,HB,GH,Country Living,Prima)
Baby Mama Soothing Nipple Balm

Score: 73/100

If you’re sensitive to lanolin or prefer a plant-based alternative, My Little Coco’s potted balm is an ultra-soothing option. The star ingredient, coconut oil, is rich in skin-softening fatty acids, delivering deep and long-lasting hydration. Testers particularly appreciated its subtle scent and moisturising effect.

However, a minor drawback is the need to wipe the balm off before nursing – a hassle during those early days of frequent feeds. Despite this, the balm is effective at calming irritation and inflammation, making it a comforting choice for sensitive skin.

Lansinoh Soothies Gel Pads

UK Approved(Esquire,Red,HB,GH,Country Living,Prima)
Soothies Gel Pads

Score: 70/100

Like a cold flannel pressed to a sore head, these cooling pads provide instant relief to tender teats. Testers appreciated how they fully cover the areola with a hydrogel that soothes and protects against friction.

The pads are easy to pop on and off between feeds and can be stored in the tray included for up to three days. However, be careful when removing them, as some testers reported discomfort during this process.

What does a nipple cream do?

“Nipple cream helps soothe and protect the skin around the nipples, especially during the early days of breastfeeding when they can become sore, cracked, or sensitive,” says midwife Louise Broadbridge.

“It creates a barrier that locks in moisture and supports healing, which can provide much-needed relief,” she adds.

While creams can offer instant relief, she cautions, “They won’t fix everything. If feeding is painful, it’s often a sign that something isn’t quite right with the latch. Creams can ease discomfort, but seeking support early on can make a significant difference long-term.”

When should you start using nipple cream?

Some mums begin applying cream during pregnancy when the nipples can become dry or itchy, but most start after breastfeeding begins.

“It can be applied immediately, either as needed or as part of a gentle routine after feeds during the early days. Many parents find it helpful during the adjustment period, particularly when nipples are adapting to frequent feeding,” explains Louise.

What to look for when choosing a nipple cream?

"For convenience, look for a food-safe formula that doesn’t need to be wiped off before feeding. A rich, balm-like consistency is ideal as it stays in place, providing longer-lasting relief,” advises Louise.

As with other baby products, such as shampoos and bubble baths, she recommends choosing a fragrance-free option with a short ingredient list. Additionally, she notes that some parents prefer lanolin-free creams, particularly if they have sensitive skin or allergies.

The verdict on nipple creams

Lansinoh’s lanolin-based nipple cream has been a midwife and mum favourite for years, so it’s no wonder it took the crown in this test, for its healing and moisturising properties.

If you’d prefer a physical barrier to protect from any irritating friction, then Lansinoh also offers silver nipple cups.

Need a lanolin and vegan alternative? My Little Coco’s coconut-oil based balm is a relieving treat in between feeds.
