best baby lotions

When it comes to caring for your baby's skin, there’s no need for a 12-step routine – less is certainly more. However, the best baby lotions are a post-bath staple, working hard to hydrate and soften, while being gentle on their beautiful skin.

With a range of hard to decipher ingredients and claims, it can be hard to know which is best for your little one. With this in mind, the Good Housekeeping Institute put the market-leading lotions to the test – both in the lab and at home with real life babies.

See our winners at a glance below, or scroll on for further advice and more in-depth verdicts:

Best baby lotions

We asked our parent panel (and their little ones), to try out the market leading baby lotions and give their verdict on how well they performed to help inform our reviews.

How we test baby lotion

best wands, tongs and wavers

We tested 13 baby lotions with over 100 testers from the Good Housekeeping Institute’s parenting panel, trying them over a two-week period. Parents were asked to assess the ease of use, design, performance and overall satisfaction.

We gathered feedback on whether the lotions improved dryness, left the skin soft and supple, how quickly the product was absorbed, and the formula's scent.

Additionally, we assessed the lotion's functionality, including its ease of dispensing. In the beauty lab, we measured the hydration levels of skin using a corneometer. This machine compares initial hydration levels versus six hours after application, to see how well the lotions hydrated skin throughout the day.

double line break

We’ve been testing products here at the Good Housekeeping Institute for over 100 years. From the best fake tans and best conditioners to the best air fryers and best mattresses.

What should I look for in a baby lotion?

best spf moisturisers

It doesn't take much for sensitive baby skin to flare up, so where possible, opt for products containing a short, skin-friendly list of natural ingredients. We’ve highlighted some of the most common things to look out for:

Fragrance-free: Generally, fragrance-free formulas are gentler on skin. If you do opt for fragrance, it’s always best to go for one with a naturally derived extract.

Chamomile: This ingredient has been used for centuries for its anti-inflammatory properties, perfect for nappy rashes and sensitive areas. It also has aromatherapeutic qualities, so it’s great for a pre-bedtime pamper.

Oat: Not exactly the same type you encounter at the breakfast table, but instead oat kernels, a commonly used ingredient in skincare. It’s incredible soothing and moisturising, particularly on extra dry or eczema prone skin.

Shea or coconut butter: These natural emollients provide an intense layer of locked-in hydration, great for keeping your baby soft as a peach all day. The beautiful scent they impart is a bonus.

The verdict on the best baby lotions

With a high score of 92/100, you can’t go wrong with our winning lotion from My Little Coco. It will leave your baby feeling moisturised and hydrated, and smelling of sweet coconut all day long.

There’s nothing like that natural baby smell though, so if you’d prefer a gentler scent, then the Child’s Farm squeezy tube is the one for you.

Weleda’s All Purpose Balm is great for chucking in the changing bag and moisturising on the go.
