Keep them entertained and engaged, with these top gifts

“There's so much learning happening when a child turns one," says Jessica Rolph, co-founder and CEO of early childhood development company, Lovevery. “Outside of notable milestones like first words and first steps, they're also beginning to notice the order of their daily routines and become infinitely curious, wanting to explore just about anything.
“Their brain craves real-world experiences; they want to be involved with everything and use their developing senses to understand how things work.
“As toddlers begin finding their voice and their special place in the world, it’s important to support their natural curiosity with playtime that builds new skills and encourages exploration, including object permanence, spatial awareness, fine motor skills, routine building, and even processing emotions.”
What do one-year-olds like to play with?
The old cliché that toddlers can find joy playing with a cardboard box can be true, but there are other, more developmentally appropriate toys that might hold their attention too. These include simple items, such as a ball to kick and chase, or toys that can be pushed and pulled. Shape sorters, puzzles and blocks can also pose fun challenges for curious toddlers to figure out. And don't forget anything that makes noise – xylophone, drums, or toy pianos, are also a hit at this age. If you can bear it!
What to avoid? Toys with small parts that can be choking hazards, moving parts that can pinch small fingers, or extra-long strings that can get tangled up.
To help sort through the choices, our parenting experts at Good Housekeeping have rounded up the best toys for one-year-olds. Each has been played with by real little testers, to see which gifts they really took too. No matter which you choose, we think the toddler in your life will approve.
