Yves Saint Laurent Beauté has collaborated with Google Glass to offer a new personalised make-up tutorial that films your make-up application as it happens and then emails you the video twenty minutes later.
Following on from the trend of make-up video tutorials available through YouTube by beauty bloggers, make-up artists and beauty experts, the company’s new concept captures your own individual makeover and allows you to replay the video and replicate the same makeup look at home. 'Rather than replacing the experience of trying out make-up instore, our aim is to offer a new dimension to experience and enhance the user’s skills,' says the brand.
After a short consultation with make up artist Fred Letailleur to assess the desired look, preliminary advice was given on the selection of products to use and a 'before' picture was taken. The tutorial then commenced (at this stage no filming took place). A base foundation was applied, while an extensive explanation of the product and the application technique was explained. After this the effect and colour products were applied to half the face and reviewed step-by-step after application in the mirror. After the half face was completed filming began, which involved a repeat of all the application steps, and when the look was complete the 'after' shot was taken.
The glasses allow the make-up artist to use both hands for the application, and for you to see footage from their perspective, with close up filming to show areas like the eyes with easy viewing of the techniques used. Our GHI beauty researcher was particularly impressed with the application and blending technique for contouring cheeks and temples, to sculpt the face, as well as the precision application of the eyeliner.

The tutorial lasts about forty five minutes, and approximately twenty minutes after the tutorial is complete an email is sent containing video tutorial footage in YouTube, 'before and after' photos and the list of Yves Saint Laurent Beauté products used during the tutorial, with direct links to buy from the main Yves Saint Laurent Beauté website.
While it is not going to give you the same level of skill as an experienced make-up artist, we think this personalised video is a great idea to allow you practice and refine your technique with guidance available at the touch of a button!
This service is currently available exclusively at the Yves Saint Laurent Beauté counter at Selfridges Oxford Street, and nationwide at Selfridges in the UK from January 2015 onwards. The appointment price is £30, redeemable against purchases.
