We were excited to road test the new Cargo Cosmetics Matte Top Coat, a lip product that promises to banish the need for stocking up on multiple finishes of your favourite shade of lipstick. Cargo Matte Top Coat is a clear (colourless) lipstick which claims to give any of your existing lip colours a flat, mattified finish.
To use, you simply apply your regular lipstick in the normal way and blot with a tissue. Then apply the matte top coat and you’re good to go – it's the ideal way to expand your lipstick wardrobe using only one product!
We found the produce glides on well, and gives the matte effect immediately. Like a lot of matte lipstick finishes, expect this product to feel drier on the lips than wearing your lipstick in the usual way. We tried this out on a few different finishes from a pink lustre lipstick to a bright red gloss. You do lose a little bit of the intensity of the shade due to blotting the colour on the tissue, but we found this quite useful on any shades in your make-up bag that you may have found a bit on the bright side (as the matte finish made them a little more wearable). The matte effect isn’t super strong, but there is a definite difference in the texture.
The product didn’t cause any feathering or smudging on the shades we tested, but we will be trying this out more extensively in 2015 for performance and longevity.
