best milk frother

We love a latte or a frothy cappuccino, but that daily caffeine hit at your local coffee shop can soon add up, so we’re all about achieving that same barista-level finish at home. And with the best milk frother, you’ll be able to make creamy lattes and cappuccinos in the comfort of your own kitchen, whenever you want.

Most models can produce hot and cold froth, and some can even deliver rich, indulgent hot chocolates, too. So, to find the best for every budget, our experts have been whipping up a storm in the lab.

The best milk frothers to buy in 2025

At the Good Housekeeping Institute, we test milk frothers by trialling every setting and function on offer, from creating hot and cold froth to simply heating milk or making delicious hot chocolates and creamy milkshakes. We judge the taste and texture of each drink, as well as assessing the quality of the foam.

You’ll find a more detailed breakdown of how we test milk frothers, plus what to consider before buying, below our reviews. But, first, time for a cuppa.

Best milk frother

Melitta Cremio Milk Frother

UK Approved(Esquire,Red,HB,GH,Country Living,Prima)
Cremio Milk Frother

Pros

  • Made a delicious hot chocolate with no spilling or overflowing during the programme
  • Coped well with frothing plant-based milk

Cons

  • Need to hold down the frothing button for three seconds to access the cold programme
  • Although it has an angled lip, there was slight dribbling down the side when pouring

Score: 95/100

Consistent and versatile, this milk frother was a strong all-rounder in testing. It scored full marks when frothing cow’s milk, delivering velvety, thick foam that was stable for over five minutes. It excelled at cold froth too. While there was a slight variation in the size of the bubbles, it still produced one of the best cold froths out of all the models in this list.

Each programme was easy to operate, with just two buttons needed – one for heating and one for frothing – and it worked quietly, too. The light-coloured interior is a nice touch, making it easier to see the min and max fill lines, a detail most models overlook.

Dualit Milk Frother Max

UK Approved(Esquire,Red,HB,GH,Country Living,Prima)
Milk Frother Max

Pros

  • Large capacity
  • Effective non-stick interior, making it easy to rinse and wipe clean

Cons

  • Bulkier than others, taking up more space in the cupboard
  • Attachments are only dishwasher-safe up to 40C, so it may be safer to hand wash

Score: 94/100

With an intuitive dial for operation, we quickly got to grips with this milk frother. Dualit’s VortecS technology and magnetic whisk basket proved effective at frothing and ensured all the chocolate was fully mixed and dissolved in our hot cocoa.

Speaking of which, this milk frother really shone in the hot chocolate test, scoring full marks for delivering a smooth, creamy drink in under two minutes. It can also make cold chocolate drinks, if you prefer. Best of all, you can just break up squares of your favourite chocolate and add it to the frother to make your drink (pure chocolate only, though).

Although the milk exceeded the desired temperature during regular frothing, our cappuccino didn’t taste sour at all. This model was also fantastic at creating latte foam, if that’s your drink of choice.

Best milk frother for cold foam

Zwilling Enfinigy Milk Frother

UK Approved(Esquire,Red,HB,GH,Country Living,Prima)
Enfinigy Milk Frother

Pros

  • Produced good hot chocolate with both cow’s milk and plant-based milk
  • Controls are well-positioned and easy to use

Cons

  • No minimum quantity markings
  • Quite large so tricky to store

Score: 94/100

Creating cold micro foam with a velvety texture, this should be your go-to model for thick, cold foam on top of your iced coffee. It excelled at hot froth too, if cold isn’t your thing, producing stable, creamy foam. Just make sure to tap the jug before pouring the milk to remove any big bubbles.

We noticed this frother was noisier than others in this list, rattling a little when the whisk was moving round, and the stainless-steel jug was slightly trickier to clean, requiring a soak or a wipe with a sponge to remove any remaining milk. But, as the jug is removable, this is pretty straightforward. It’s also lightweight and well-balanced so pouring is easy and the curved lip ensures you won’t spill a drop.

Best single-serve milk frother

Nespresso Aeroccino 4

UK Approved(Esquire,Red,HB,GH,Country Living,Prima)
Aeroccino 4

Pros

  • Attachments and jug are dishwasher safe
  • Touch controls are straightforward and responsive
  • Feels durable and well-made with a cool-touch body during use

Cons

  • Small capacity might not be good for families
  • No minimum markings, and the max ones are difficult to see

Score: 93/100

With a small capacity and quick one-minute frothing times, we’d opt for the Aeroccino 4 every time if we were making coffee for one. The milk had a velvety texture, remained stable for over five minutes, and combined well with our coffee, ticking all the boxes for a fantastic cappuccino. Plant-based milk drinkers will be pleased to hear that it frothed this well too, although there were some slightly larger bubbles in the mix.

Its latte foam was also excellent, although it broke down a little during the five-minute window, plus we found it difficult to tell the difference between the light and thick foam settings from the symbols on the frother. Those are minor niggles though – this is a sleek, speedy frother for those who just want one delicious cup at a time.

Smeg Mini Milk Frother

UK Approved(Esquire,Red,HB,GH,Country Living,Prima)
Mini Milk Frother

Pros

  • One-button operation
  • Body was cool to the touch throughout

Cons

  • Limited capacity
  • Heated plant-based milk to a higher temperature than desired (though this didn’t affect the taste)

Score: 92/100

Smeg is known for its stylish, retro-looking appliances and its milk frother is no exception. Available in pastel green, blue, red, white, black and cream, there’s something to suit every kitchen. It’s compact too, making it easy to squeeze into a cupboard or small enough to have out on your countertop.

In testing, it frothed both cow’s and plant-based milk consistently well, delivering a creamy, velvety texture that combined well with our coffee. It performed even better with cold foam, earning full marks for its perfect texture after just a minute of frothing. Just note that its rounded lip meant that milk dribbled down the side when we poured.

Best handheld milk frother and best budget

Aerolatte To Go Handheld Milk Frother

UK Approved(Esquire,Red,HB,GH,Country Living,Prima)
To Go Handheld Milk Frother

Pros

  • Supplied with a carry case to keep it protected
  • Works with any jug or mug, offering flexibility

Cons

  • Only has one speed setting
  • Need to use a tall jug for frothing to avoid splashes

Score: 89/100

If you’re short on storage space, a handheld milk frother could be a good choice. This battery-powered device is lightweight and easy to use, with one switch on the side to turn the whisk on. Unlike others on this list, it can’t heat milk, so you’ll need to do that separately before getting to work.

It impressed when frothing both cow’s and plant-based milk, delivering stable foam that combined well with coffee. It also achieved a delicious hot chocolate in just over a minute, although the milk wasn’t as velvety smooth as it was when we frothed it on its own. It didn’t froth cold foam well, producing larger bubbles, which dissipated quickly. But overall, this budget pick is a smart choice for quick, simple frothing.

Salter Aspen Milk Frother

UK Approved(Esquire,Red,HB,GH,Country Living,Prima)
Aspen Milk Frother

Pros

  • Has a curved lip for easy, mess-free pouring
  • Made a good hot chocolate, despite some residue being left behind

Cons

  • The swivel base is quite stiff, and it wobbled a little when placing and removing the jug
  • The controls aren’t well-placed for left-handed users

Score: 86/100

This Salter milk frother is a great option for everyday users who want fuss-free froth at an affordable price. The silver finish gives it a sleek, modern look and the design has been well thought out to deliver a straightforward user experience, from one-touch operation to the light-coloured interior, which makes it easy to see the minimum and max markings.

It performed best when frothing cow’s milk, creating a good consistency once we’d tapped some of the larger bubbles out. Its plant-based milk froth had impressive stability too and combined well with the coffee. Both the light foam and cold foam settings were less effective though, with some separation between the foam and the milk. Our hot chocolate took over two minutes to make as well, but it was deliciously creamy.

Krups Stainless Steel Milk Frother

Stainless Steel Milk Frother

Pros

  • Non-stick interior is easy to clean – just rinse!
  • Enough frothing capacity for two drinks

Cons

  • Power button requires a firm press to turn it on and off
  • Some dribbling down the side when pouring

Score: 86/100

Coffee lovers can rely on this great value milk frother for thick, velvety hot foam every time. The controls couldn’t be simpler thanks to the one-button operation and all you need to do to switch from foam to heated milk is remove the whisk attachment.

Our plant-based milk frothed in under a minute, combining well with coffee, with a creamy consistency. Regular cow’s milk had good stability too, but we noticed some residue around the edge of the jug after heating.

A Modo Mio MilkEasy Milk Frother

Pros

  • Obvious beep when it finishes frothing
  • Cool-to-the-touch throughout

Cons

  • Dark interior makes it tricky to see the minimum and max markings
  • Slight dribble when pouring

Score: 84/100

This compact milk frother performed best when heating milk (minus any foam). It didn’t scorch or leave any residue in the bottom of the jug. When it came to frothing, it produced a thick, stable foam with only a small amount of separation from the milk – a quick stir sorted that out though.

Our cold foam had some larger bubbles, which made it less stable than we’d have liked, but it still lasted for three minutes and combined well with the rest of the drink. Overall, this is a sleek-looking milk frother with a considered design, intuitive controls and detailed instructions.

Morphy Richards Brew & Blend Milk Frother

Brew & Blend Milk Frother
Now 20% Off

Pros

  • Curved lip makes it easy to pour
  • Instructions include diagrams for milk-to-coffee ratios for different types of drinks

Cons

  • Wasn’t overly clear what symbols represented each preset
  • Attachments didn’t always feel secure

Score: 81/100

A versatile choice, this milk frother has four preset functions – warm milk, thick froth, light froth, and cold froth – making it very straightforward to use. When frothing cow’s milk, it produced mainly small, thick bubbles, which created a creamy texture that combined beautifully with our coffee. That said, we did notice some spitting during frothing, despite only filing the milk to the max marker. The same issue cropped up when making hot chocolate, with some milk dripping down the sides.

This is one of the few models in our list to also make cold chocolate drinks and milkshakes – and it was impressive on test. All the powder was well combined, and it had a smooth, creamy finish. Again, a small amount of spitting occurred, so we recommend filling to just below the maximum capacity for the best results.

Lakeland Milk and Hot Chocolate Frother

UK Approved(Esquire,Red,HB,GH,Country Living,Prima)
Milk and Hot Chocolate Frother

Pros

  • Handle remains cool to the touch
  • Compact size makes it easy to store

Cons

  • Cold foam dissipated quickly due to bigger bubbles
  • We sometimes had to press the controls twice before it responded

Score: 77/100

This bigger capacity milk frother is a good value option for large families. The controls are intuitive, and we appreciated the audible beep that tells you when the programme’s finished.

Frothing cow’s milk produced thick, velvety foam with good stability, and both our regular and plant-based hot chocolates impressed, with all the chocolate dissolving and combining nicely. As there’s no spout, it was tricky to pour the drinks without making a mess and we often found the temperature ran too high, risking scorching and a sour taste. The milk frother was noisy in use too – we were able to hear it over the radio.

Despite these niggles, the lid prevents any spitting or splashing when frothing, and the magnetic whisk is easy to remove and can be popped in the dishwasher for a quick clean.

How we test milk frothers

At the Good Housekeeping Institute, we test milk frothers with both cow’s milk and plant-based milk, filling them to their maximum capacity. We froth each batch of milk and assess the quality of the foam, whether it’s frothed all the way through, and if there’s any residue at the bottom. We also assess the overall flavour and texture with our all-important taste test.

We then see how well each model heats milk, checking if any foam is produced (a little is okay, but nothing more, as it’s only meant to heat after all). During heating, we look for any overflow or spilling and take a temperature reading to check for scorch risk. A temperature above 60C would put the milk at risk of burning and leaving residue at the bottom of the jug.

For those that can make hot chocolate, we also test out this function and assess the result, looking for smooth, creamy cocoa with an indulgent, rich flavour.

If it can make cold foam or half foam (latte/part foam), we test this too, again checking the quality of the foam, the texture of the drink, and whether there’s any scorching or residue at the bottom of the jug. We also judge whether the foam is stable and note if it dissipates too quickly.

Some milk frothers can also make milkshakes, so if they have this feature, we see how well they combine the instant powder with the milk. Again, we taste the result, judging the texture of the drink and checking whether any powder is left in the bottom.

As with all our product tests, our experts judge the design, ease of use, and instructions of each milk frother throughout. We then gather all the feedback and award a final score.

What should I look for when buying a milk frother?

While you can use a blender or whisk to froth milk, they won’t produce the silky-smooth finish that a milk frother can deliver. When shopping for the best frother for your home, these are the factors to consider.

Type: Most of the models in this list are electric countertop milk frothers that contain a heating element and whisk inside so they can simultaneously heat and froth the milk to create a smooth foam. Alternatively, you can opt for a handheld frother. These battery-operated or rechargeable whisks work by incorporating air into the milk and should be placed directly into your cup or jug to froth. Typically, electric milk frothers make better quality froth and are more consistent than handheld models.

Functions: Hot milk for coffees, hot froth for cappuccinos, light froth for a latte and cold froth for iced coffees: there are lots of settings to consider when shopping for your ideal milk frother. Some models also feature a hot chocolate setting.

Capacity: Milk frothers have two maximum capacities: one for froth capacity and one for regular heated milk, as the milk expands when the whisk incorporates air into it. For one cappuccino, it’s best to froth around 120-150ml of milk, so if you’re making drinks for multiple coffee drinks, you might want to opt for the Dualit Milk Frother Max, which has a 540ml capacity.

How do milk frothers work?

Milk frothers incorporate air into the milk, creating small bubbles for that all-important silky creaminess. These handy gadgets work with cow’s milk as well as plant-based alternatives, although cow’s milk often froths better than others (mostly due to protein and fat content).

best milk frothers

The verdict: What is the best milk frother to buy in 2025?

Melitta’s Cremio Milk Frother is our top pick for everyday milk frothing thanks to its consistent results in testing. Those living in coffee-loving households might want to consider our runner-up, the Dualit Milk Frother Max because of its large capacity.

We also recommend the Aerolatte Handheld Milk Frother as an alternative to the electric countertop frothers on this list. It’s compact, easy to use, and wallet friendly.
