The best luxury mattresses for the most indulgent, five-star sleep at home

If you've got the budget, you won't regret investing in these Tried and Tested mattresses

By
best luxury mattresses

Given that we spend roughly a third of our lives sleeping – or at least, trying to – investing in a quality mattress is key.

While a higher price doesn’t always translate to better quality, our experts' best luxury mattresses combine premium natural materials, excellent craftsmanship and innovative tech to help you achieve a great night's sleep.

Whether you’re looking for a supportive pocket sprung design or you prefer plush memory foam for next-level comfort, we’ve tested a range of high-end mattresses from the most popular brands including Simba, Tempur and Hypnos.

These are our top luxury picks for 2025, with detailed reviews below. They will all set you back over £1,200, but it's worth noting that the big brands regularly offer sizeable savings, so there's plenty of opportunity to nab a premium mattress for less.

Don't have over £1200 but still want a quality buy? Head to our best mattress roundup.

How we test

At the Good Housekeeping Institute, our mattress testing process is extremely rigorous. We enlist a panel of testers to trial each mattress for at least six weeks before asking them to report back on a range of factors, including delivery experience, comfort, support, temperature regulation and, of course, how well they slept over the trial period.

We also consult our reader panel to see how each mattress brand performs over time. We received nearly 4,000 responses and everyone who took part had owned their mattress for at least six months, so they were able to give us detailed feedback on what they're like to sleep on night after night and whether any dips form in the surface over time.

Finally, our in-house experts collate all the feedback, and each mattress is awarded an overall score.

The prices shown are for a standard UK double size.

Best luxury mattress

Hypnos Legacy Origins III Mattress

UK Approved(Esquire,Red,HB,GH,Country Living,Prima)
Legacy Origins III Mattress

Pros

  • All our panel slept well and would buy the mattress again
  • Good for temperature regulation and breathability
  • Quiet to lie on

Cons

  • Heavy when getting into place and to rotate and turn

Score: 94/100

Our top-scorer is double sided (so you can flip it to make it last longer) and has multiple layers of pocket springs, moisture wicking, plant-based fibres, and hypoallergenic (and naturally fire resistant) British wool. It’s all encased in a layer of soft viscose, all of which combines to create a mattress that was quiet and breathable for everyone.

Our panel unanimously declared it very comfortable to sleep on and praised the “perfect” level of support for all sleep styles. One person went so far as describing the mattress as “life changing,” delivering a “brilliant night’s sleep”.

As a brand, Hypnos also fared well in our reader survey, with most readers telling us that their mattress kept its high quality over time, was good for back issues, and remained still if their partners fidgeted. In fact, nearly everyone was happy with its comfort over time – a resounding vote of confidence.

Runner-up

Harrison Spinks Grassington 5750 Pocket Mattress

UK Approved(Esquire,Red,HB,GH,Country Living,Prima)
Grassington 5750 Pocket Mattress

Pros

  • Smooth delivery service and clear instructions
  • No lingering smells
  • Comfortable, supportive and temperature-regulating

Cons

  • Heavy
  • Deep sheets required

Score: 93/100

According to our 2025 sleep survey, GH readers are big fans of Harrison Spinks mattresses, and it’s hardly surprising. This pocket sprung design – which is handcrafted in the UK – is made from fully traceable wool British wool with layers of cotton, hemp and flax to regulate your temperature and prevent overheating. It contains 5,750 pocket springs packed into sealed units to contour to your body for extra comfort and support. It’s also hypoallergenic and free from foam and FR chemical treatments.

Testers rated the firm feel, saying it offered plenty of support and pressure relief for all sleeping positions. It also ticked the box in terms of temperature regulation, and panellists said they were less disturbed by their partner’s tossing and turning. “I am a poor sleeper; however, I have been going into a very nice deep sleep with this mattress,” one panel member told us.

It doesn’t require flipping (hurrah!) but rotating the mattress is a two-person job as it’s on the heavier side.

Best luxury mattress for side sleepers

The White Company Hampden Mattress

UK Approved(Esquire,Red,HB,GH,Country Living,Prima)
Hampden Mattress

Pros

  • Supportive and comfortable for everyone
  • Good cushioning for side sleepers

Cons

  • Smelled strongly on arrival
  • Heavy to move

Score: 92/100

All The White Company’s mattresses are made by Hypnos, so you’re guaranteed the same quality as our popular winner. This is made to order and is filled with a mixture of pocket springs and traceable British wool. There are also layers of latex, cotton, flax, and hemp, and it’s the brand’s “most premium mattress”.

And our panel wasn't disappointed. One tester said it “creates exceptional comfort and support,” and it’s temperature regulating too. Again, another declared it “one of the most comfortable beds I have ever slept on”, and it suited an array of sleeping positions thanks to its medium firmness level. It even converted a tester who wasn’t sure if pocket springs were for them.

It did smell for a little bit, and it’s heavy to move. You can’t vacuum it either. But these aren’t dealbreakers – our panellists barely docked a point for it overall, such was the quality of sleep they enjoyed

Best hybrid luxury mattress

Sealy Posturepedic Exquisite Essence Medium

UK Approved(Esquire,Red,HB,GH,Country Living,Prima)
Posturepedic Exquisite Essence Medium

Pros

  • Helped alleviate back pain for some testers
  • Everyone agreed that it’s comfortable, supportive and cushioning
  • Premium build was sturdy and fitted our panel’s bed frames well

Cons

  • Deep design may not suit standard bed sheets
  • Slight smell on arrival

Score: 92/100

With its luxurious look and feel, it’s no surprise that our testers scored this hybrid mattress highly. All Sealy’s mattresses are designed with the help of orthopaedic surgeons, and the combination of foam and spring supported our testers during the night. It even helped ease back pain for some.

The foam provided a welcome softness and cushioned our testers without them sinking into it, meaning it suited sleepers of all styles. Not to mention, our panellists told us it was breathable, and stable when their partners moved.

It’s the deepest mattress on our list, so you may need to invest in new sheets. But given one tester told us it made them “look forward to going to bed a bit earlier”, we’d say that’s a compromise worth making.

We've also tested Sealy's Elevate UltraLux Mattress, which scored 92/100 in our tests.

Best luxury mattress for range of firmness

Tempur Pro Plus SmartCool Mattress

UK Approved(Esquire,Red,HB,GH,Country Living,Prima)
Pro Plus SmartCool Mattress

Pros

  • Good temperature regulation
  • Everyone said it was comfortable and supportive
  • Easy-to-remove and washable zip cover to keep it clean and fresh for longer

Cons

  • Rotating the mattress is a two-three person job
  • New mattress smell took some time to dissipate
  • One tester had a poor experience with the delivery service

Score: 89/100

Most mattresses in our round-up fall into the medium firm category, but if you want to go softer or firmer, then this Tempur option is worth considering. The memory foam mattress is available in four levels to suit all needs.

Though memory foam traditionally has a bad reputation for temperature regulation, this design boasts SmartCool technology to absorb moisture and prevent you from overheating. Testers said they liked the cool-touch cover, which successfully kept them comfortable and sweat-free while they slept, and the appreciated the washable cover.

Tempur also says its Advanced Material provides its ‘best ever pressure relief’, promising to adapt as you move. We certainly received positive feedback from our panel – although the foam took a few nights to get used to, it felt comfortable and kept sleepers supported in all positions. It scored highly for its whisper-quiet design and the lack of motion transfer, too.

Some thought it looked like a hospital bed and the new mattress smell did linger for a few weeks, but these are minor quibbles.

Best more eco-friendly option

Hypnos Rainforest Mattress

UK Approved(Esquire,Red,HB,GH,Country Living,Prima)
Rainforest Mattress

Pros

  • Comfortable and supportive
  • Quiet overnight
  • Good delivery and customer service

Cons

  • Heavy to move and flip

Score: 89/100

Created in collaboration with the Eden Project, this pocket sprung mattress uses responsibly sourced fibres, including breathable cotton, fruit fibres, bamboo and Tencel, along with seaweed exacts, which can help eliminate odour. It's fully recyclable, so it won’t end up in landfill, and it’s free from chemicals and foams.

The mattress – which is available in two firmness levels – was a huge hit with our testing panel. “It honestly feels like sleeping at a luxury hotel every night!” said one satisfied tester, while another told us: “It feels like sleeping on a cloud.”

Everyone was impressed with the high-quality craftsmanship, and the mattress offered a good level of comfort and support for back and side sleepers. It was also very quiet overnight, helping them snooze soundly.

Like many of the mattresses in this round-up, it is fairly heavy to move. One panellist said it could have been a bit more breathable, and some noted that they could occasionally feel the tufted parts of the mattress. Still, it’s a worthy choice for the eco-conscious buyer.

Best luxury mattress in a box

Simba Hybrid® Luxe Mattress

UK Approved(Esquire,Red,HB,GH,Country Living,Prima)
Hybrid® Luxe Mattress

Pros

  • Premium construction and fillings
  • Cool and comfortable to sleep on
  • Took shape quickly once unboxed

Cons

  • Deep design may not work for everyone
  • Some noticed dips, but they didn’t all linger, so follow care guidance to maintain quality

Score: 88/100

This luxurious mattress in a box from B-corp brand Simba comes highly recommended by our panel. It kept them cool, comfortable and well supported, thanks to 6,000 springs and a breathable layer of bamboo and wool.

Testers found the foam cushioned their bodies nicely and liked the added height this mattress brings (thanks to its 11! different layers). It's a good one to opt for if you want to get in and out of bed easily.

At 31cm, this is one of the deepest mattresses on our list, which has its pros but also means you’ll probably need to invest in new fitted sheets. It’s also worth double checking it will work with your current bed frame. Some testers did notice some dips over time, although not all were permanent.

Best for pressure relief

Simba Earth Apex Mattress

UK Approved(Esquire,Red,HB,GH,Country Living,Prima)
Earth Apex Mattress

Pros

  • High-quality build
  • Effective at regulating temperature
  • Good support and comfort

Cons

  • Deep design may not be suitable for everyone

Score: 86/100

The Apex mattress is the jewel in Simba's natural fibre Earth range. The deep, weighty design – which features 6,700 pocket springs and layers of luxurious Cashgora, silk and British wool – is designed to provide plush, tailored support while keeping you cool and comfortable.

Testers found the medium firm mattress was extremely supportive and a pleasure to sleep on, with some commenting that it helped ease aches and pains. It sprang back into shape each morning, with no dipping or sagging reported, and it scored well for temperature regulation and breathability, too. One tester even said it helped with their insomnia.

Just note, it does require deep-fitted sheets, and you’ll probably need a second person to help with regular rotation.
