9 best cordless drills to shop in 2025, tested by a DIY expert
Our round-up includes the most powerful DIY go-to's, pro favorites and everything in between.

As we enter DIY season, there’s one tool every home renovation enthusiast should have in their kit. The best cordless drills are great multi-taskers, whether you’re tightening loose doorknobs, hanging a bookshelf in the bedroom or putting flatpack furniture together.
Given the hundreds of flatpacks we've collectively assembled in the lab, our Good Housekeeping Institute team felt well placed to develop the testing protocols to review the leading drills again, just as you would use them at home. Our DIY expert was looking for models that offered control and accuracy when drilling into different materials and surfaces, to help everyone from novices to skilled DIYers achieve the perfect results.
Whether you’re drilling, screwing or hammer drilling, we’ve found the best tool for the job, including picks from leading brands including Makita, Ryobi, and Bosch. Shop our top-rated cordless drills below and read on for everything you need to know before buying.
How we test cordless drills
In our tests, we use each cordless drill exactly as you would at home, to ensure they’re up to the job.
We start with drilling – our expert makes two different-sized holes (3mm and 6mm) in various materials, including studwork wood, steel and tile, timing how long it takes and noting down whether it shakes, vibrates or slips from the marked hole. They then complete the same test for any models with hammer drilling capabilities, making holes in common house brick and concrete.
Next up is driving screws. Our expert measures how quickly and easily they can drive different types of screws into studwork wood, and time how long it takes to remove them. They also check whether the drill can do this without the dreaded threading of screws.
Finally, they consider the ease of use, design and instructions of each drill, assessing features such as easy-grip handles, placement of work lights, and how easy it is to attach different drill bits.
These are the ones we’re adding to our toolkit.
