These are the best rechargeable lamps if you don't like the big light
Only the moodiest of lights made our expert testers' cut

Lamps are key to any space (especially if you’re not a fan of the dreaded big light). They help to create the mood and add pops of colour and design to your interiors. But let’s be honest, cables lurking behind them can really detract from the aesthetic. So, it’s not surprising that wireless lamps (or portable lamps or cordless lamps – take your pick!) have seriously taken off in popularity over the past year or so.
We wanted to put them to the test in our Good Housekeeping Institute lab because they didn’t just pique our interest in terms of style – we had a lot of questions. Are the lamps bright enough? What is the battery life like? Are they easy to move around? Basically, do they live up to the hype?
And, in short, we were impressed. Here’s our list of the best portable lamps if you’re ready to add one to your home straightaway, but keep scrolling for our full reviews and everything you need to consider before buying.
Whether you are looking for the best portable lamps or best mattress toppers to enhance your bedroom with comfort and lighting, we have the guide to suit every budget. Read our best mattress toppers guide next.
What to look for in a rechargeable lamp
We’re not just talking about whether the colour is right here (although that is important). When it comes to investing in a portable lamp, there are a few other criteria worth thinking about.
Battery life
The lamps on our list lasted from five to 20 hours before needing a recharge, so consider how long you'll want yours on for at a time. If you plan to have it on for hours on end, a longer life will save you hassle.
There was less variation when it came to charging time – most were ready within three to four hours.
Brightness
Full disclaimer, these are best for mood lighting. If you need bright light or even a more directional reading lamp, we’d still suggest opting for traditional lightbulbs, as the technology isn’t quite there yet. But for a cosy, dimmed feel, the lamps below should do the trick, and you can always use several lamps in a larger space to create layered lighting.
There's no fixed guide about how to light your home (not least because what you want when you’re working is very different to when you’re watching TV). But in rough terms, look for around 200 lux for living rooms and bedrooms, and between 400 and 500 lux for kitchens, dining rooms and home offices where you might be undertaking more detailed tasks.
In terms of how the lamps compare to this, the Philips Hue lamp was the brightest and recorded 618 lux in the lab. But this is when measured immediately below the bulb – when taken again 30cm away it had dropped to 37. So with one positioned next to you or a couple of lamps dotted around a room, you should get a good glow but they can't recreate the levels of an overhead light.
