Lamps are key to any space (especially if you’re not a fan of the dreaded big light). They help to create the mood and add pops of colour and design to your interiors. But let’s be honest, cables lurking behind them can really detract from the aesthetic. So, it’s not surprising that wireless lamps (or portable lamps or cordless lamps – take your pick!) have seriously taken off in popularity over the past year or so.

We wanted to put them to the test in our Good Housekeeping Institute lab because they didn’t just pique our interest in terms of style – we had a lot of questions. Are the lamps bright enough? What is the battery life like? Are they easy to move around? Basically, do they live up to the hype?

And, in short, we were impressed. Here’s our list of the best portable lamps if you’re ready to add one to your home straightaway, but keep scrolling for our full reviews and everything you need to consider before buying.

Whether you are looking for the best portable lamps or best mattress toppers to enhance your bedroom with comfort and lighting, we have the guide to suit every budget. Read our best mattress toppers guide next.

What to look for in a rechargeable lamp

We’re not just talking about whether the colour is right here (although that is important). When it comes to investing in a portable lamp, there are a few other criteria worth thinking about.

Battery life

The lamps on our list lasted from five to 20 hours before needing a recharge, so consider how long you'll want yours on for at a time. If you plan to have it on for hours on end, a longer life will save you hassle.

There was less variation when it came to charging time – most were ready within three to four hours.

Brightness

Full disclaimer, these are best for mood lighting. If you need bright light or even a more directional reading lamp, we’d still suggest opting for traditional lightbulbs, as the technology isn’t quite there yet. But for a cosy, dimmed feel, the lamps below should do the trick, and you can always use several lamps in a larger space to create layered lighting.

There's no fixed guide about how to light your home (not least because what you want when you’re working is very different to when you’re watching TV). But in rough terms, look for around 200 lux for living rooms and bedrooms, and between 400 and 500 lux for kitchens, dining rooms and home offices where you might be undertaking more detailed tasks.

In terms of how the lamps compare to this, the Philips Hue lamp was the brightest and recorded 618 lux in the lab. But this is when measured immediately below the bulb – when taken again 30cm away it had dropped to 37. So with one positioned next to you or a couple of lamps dotted around a room, you should get a good glow but they can't recreate the levels of an overhead light.

Here’s a picture of the dispersion of light in our lab below:

Lamp shade design

This applies mostly to Pooky, as you can mix and match its shades and lamp sticks. But keep in mind that a darker shade may reduce the brightness of the light.

Weight

Increasingly, bigger lamps are wireless (including floor lamps!), so if you’re shopping for one online, check the weight to make sure it’s not too heavy to move it from room to room – if that’s something you think you’ll do.

Equally, if you’re not planning on moving yours, check the cable length and your plug socket positioning so you can recharge it easily.

Outdoor capabilities

Some lamps are suitable for use outside, which means you can easily take them from your living room to your patio to enjoy alfresco evenings. But many don’t have this feature, so it’s important to think through how you plan to use the lamp before you buy.

Replaceable lightbulbs

Because lots of the LED lights are integrated, it’s often not possible to replace the bulbs when they eventually die. They should still last years; Philips, for example, says its lamp has a 10-year lifespan while John Lewis & Partners Mushroom Lamp should last 20,000 hours – or two-and-a-bit years of continuous use. But this isn’t great when it comes to sustainability, or if you just really like your lamp, and don’t want to part ways with it.

That’s why we like Pooky, because you can buy new LED cells for your lamp, which means it will keep shining for years. You can also keep a spare in the cupboard ready to swap in while you’re recharging the other so you’re never without light – ideal.

We’re sure other brands will follow suit eventually.

Testing the different portable lamps in a dark room at the Good Housekeeping Institute

How we test rechargeable lamps

Our portable lamp testing involves lots of measuring; testers check battery life, charging times, and light levels from four set distances. They even take the temperature of every bulb to look for overheating.

Then, our experts assess the stability of each lamp, ease of use (does it have a remote for example, or is it smart), overall design and any accompanying instructions.

These are our top picks to light up your home as the nights draw in.

Pooky Swan Neck Rechargeable Wall Fitting

UK Approved(Esquire,Red,HB,GH,Country Living,Prima)
Swan Neck Rechargeable Wall Fitting

Pros

  • Easy to use and set up
  • Quality design felt durable
  • Bulb didn’t overheat

Cons

  • Remote control options could be better if you have multiple Pooky lamps

Score: 94/100

There’s a lot more to Pooky’s lighting than its head-turning designs. It’s the only brand on our list with lamps where the LED cells can be replaced, giving them many more years of life. It also means rechargeable wall lights are possible – as there’s no rewiring needed just to accommodate a new one.

While you have to set aside up to five hours for a full charge, the recharging process is simple – pop out the LED cell, plug it into a USB–C charger, wait for the indicator light to turn from blue to green, and then reinstall. Its outstanding running time even exceeded the 15 hours advertised too, lasting for close to 20 on test.

There’s a handy remote, but if you have several Pooky lights in your room, the one remote will control them all, earning mixed feedback from our testers who noted that to turn just one off you must use the manual on-lamp controls.

As for brightness, its lux levels were some of the best on test – at its highest setting, it emitted 534 lux when measured directly beneath the lamp, and it projected light relatively well too, so even at 30cm away we still recorded 80 lux, something only one other lamp bettered.

Price quoted is for fitting only – the shade shown is £32.

Pooky Trindle Rechargeable Table Lamp

UK Approved(Esquire,Red,HB,GH,Country Living,Prima)
Trindle Rechargeable Table Lamp

Pros

  • Great design with magnetic LED that’s easy to remove, recharge and replace – there’s even a low battery indicator
  • Mix and match shades make it easy to find your room’s perfect match

Cons

  • Same remote control limitations as the Pooky wall light

Score: 94/100

If you like the sound of the light above but don’t want a wall light, this is the Pooky for you. It scored slightly lower (we're talking about 0.3 points worse here) because the lampshade we tested absorbed more light, but you can mix and match these to suit your decor. Plus, it uses the same long-lasting and replaceable LED cell, so you should get the same light quality.

The stand, which also comes in several shades, didn’t wobble when knocked, but weighed about 1.26kg, making it heavier than some if you want to move it about. These look so timeless, however, we’d give ours a permanent home.

Price quoted is for the bronze lamp. The shade shown is £52.

The White Company Harris Portable Lamp

UK Approved(Esquire,Red,HB,GH,Country Living,Prima)
Harris Portable Lamp

Pros

  • Stand-out battery life
  • Helpful instructions for easy set-up

Cons

  • Taller and heavier stand makes it best left in one place
  • Lower light levels than some

Score: 93/100

The White Company always wins us over with its elegant designs and this black and white lamp is no exception. Despite its sleek stand, it was stable and lit up our lab for 11 hours, only needing three and a half to recharge – making it one of the best on test for its battery.

The bulb didn’t overheat, but its lux levels were lower than some (the highest measurement we got was 214), which means it will create a nice ambience but may not suit if you need brighter lights. Our testers praised the responsive controls though, and we think a couple would look just right in the living room for cosy winter evenings.

M&S Collection Colby Rechargeable Lamp

UK Approved(Esquire,Red,HB,GH,Country Living,Prima)
Colby Rechargeable Lamp

Pros

  • Intuitively designed
  • Indoor and outdoor lamp

Cons

  • Hard to tell when battery life is low

Score: 92/100

Mushroom lamps are increasingly popular for their cute, quirky design, and this one from M&S is affordable and reliable. It wasn’t the brightest we tried but had decent lux levels on high and medium, and it’s simple to switch between the three settings with a tap.

Testers liked its sturdy feel and the fact that it would be easy to clean, helping keep dust at bay. The battery life also impressed, lasting for nearly nine hours after a four-and-a-half hour charge. You can’t adjust the angle of the shade or light, but this one is suitable for outdoor use – ideal come summer.

Houseof Tube Cordless Table Lamp

Tube Cordless Table Lamp

Pros

  • Lightweight if you want to move it around
  • Good brightness in the lab

Cons

  • Basic instruction manual

Score: 89/100

This unique design proved a real all-rounder in the lab. There’s no lamp shade, so it disperses bright light well and it was easy to set up – you just screw on the bulb and it starts to shine.

The LED didn’t overheat, and the battery lasted for nearly ten hours before needing a recharge. There’s no clear indicator for when the battery is getting low, but it charged within a fairly quick three and a half hours. With three brightness levels, it should suit most preferences too.

Philips Hue Go Portable Table Lamp

UK Approved(Esquire,Red,HB,GH,Country Living,Prima)
Hue Go Portable Table Lamp

Pros

  • Suitable for outdoor use
  • Most technologically advanced design on the list

Cons

  • Limited functionality if you don't use the app
  • No clear low battery indicator

Score: 89/100

Sometimes, getting up to switch on a lamp feels like a smidge too much effort, but with this smart lamp, you can control it easily via Alexa or straight from your phone. With the app, you'll also unlock a range of colours and settings (like a candle flicker) that you can't access without it.

It's a great pick if you have other Philips Hue bulbs in your home, as you can control all your lighting in one place. But even if you're new to the brand, our testers found it easy to set up and use, thanks to detailed instructions.

Its battery life was average at about six and a half hours, but it was the brightest we tested, emitting over 600 lux when measured immediately below the lamp.

John Lewis Mushroom Rechargeable Dimmable Table Lamp

UK Approved(Esquire,Red,HB,GH,Country Living,Prima)
Mushroom Rechargeable Dimmable Table Lamp

Pros

  • Great brightness and design for price
  • Decent battery life at 8 hours

Cons

  • Charging time on the longer end at close to five hours

Score: 89/100

Another mini mushroom, this would make a great desk lamp if you need a touch of extra light on grey days. There’s no need to worry about knocking it or overheating, and it had a good lux score – especially on high where it exceeded 470 (depending on how close to it you are). Even at 30cm away, it still emitted over 100 lux – the best we recorded from that distance.

There are three settings, but the button to switch between them was a little too responsive, making it easy to cycle through a couple even when you just want to increase the light by one. But that’s a small niggle for an otherwise chic pick.

Orion Portable LED Outdoor Table Lamp

Pros

  • Versatile design that’s primarily intended for outdoor use
  • Decent lux levels

Cons

  • Battery life not that long-lasting

Score: 83/100

Bringing mood lighting to your garden table, this is a thoughtfully designed lamp. It’s particularly bright on its highest setting (294 lux) and the bulb didn’t get too hot, charging in just over three hours.

It started to dim after five hours though, so while it should last you through an alfresco dinner party, it’s certainly not the best we’ve tried. It was a bit wobblier than some, too. Our testers liked the way the controls work though – you hold down the button to brighten or dim it, which means you can find a more personalised lighting level than those with fixed settings.

Keko Rechargeable Touch Dimmable Table Lamp

Pros

  • Quick charging time
  • Good portability

Cons

  • Lower battery life

Score: 81/100

No one likes waiting around, and with this lamp you won’t have to – or at least for not as long. It charged in just over two and a half hours, making it the speediest we tested by far. In our tests, the battery lasted just over five hours (although Dunelm says it can last between six and eight) and had good brightness on high and on medium with one measurement coming in over 250 lux.

Weighing less than 500 grams, it’s easy to move around to wherever you need light most, but watch out for knocks as it wobbled a little. It didn’t get too hot though, and while the instructions are fairly basic, it’s straightforward to use.

Oka Mini Grisewood Wireless Lamp and Shade

UK Approved(Esquire,Red,HB,GH,Country Living,Prima)
Mini Grisewood Wireless Lamp and Shade

Pros

  • Intuitive to use
  • Compact design should fit into small spaces and wasn’t too wobbly when knocked

Cons

  • Only two light settings
  • Shorter battery life than some

Score: 83/100

If you need something compact, then this lamp is the one. It can be used outside and in, and has two light settings to choose from (either 50% or 100%). While not the brightest, its lux levels were good, especially on its highest setting, measuring 464 without fading too quickly.

Set-up and use was easy, but its battery started to drain quickly after about six hours. It was relatively quick to recharge though – it took three and a half hours. And given its charming antique finish, we’re more than happy to make the time.

The verdict on portable lamps

There's no doubt about it, Pooky is our top recommendation for rechargeable lamps. You can change the lightbulbs, its lamps have a great battery life, and they come in lots of stylish designs and colourways.

They are pricey though, so if you're on a budget (and don't mind the fact that eventually your lamp will be redundant) our M&S or John Lewis picks are great value and on-trend buys.
