The best air mattress to buy for overnight guests and camping trips

These inflatable mattresses are surprisingly comfortable

Good Housekeeping UK

The best air mattresses will surprise you. Having slept on one while waiting for my bed to arrive after moving into my new flat, I can confirm they're incredibly comfy, with some mirroring the features of the best mattresses. So you needn't feel bad about sticking Auntie Betty on one at Christmas.

And while it may be tempting to skimp on your air bed if you don’t plan on using it often, investing in a quality design is the best way to ensure you won’t wake up groggy and achy the next morning.

The best inflatable mattresses should offer a good amount of support and be simple to set up. The Good Housekeeping Institute doesn’t take great sleep lying down, so to help you find your perfect bedtime companion, we enlisted a panel of testers to trial a range of designs from leading brands.

We know how much a bad night’s sleep can affect your day, and we also know what makes a great mattress (we've tested hundreds of them after all), so we’ve used all our experience and spent time scouring the market to find the best air beds to help you wake up refreshed.

We tasked our panel of sleepy testers to try out a range of leading models in different styles and budgets, to find our winners (read more about how we test below our full reviews). We've also included some picks recommended and slept on by our editors.

Warning: your guests may not want to leave.

Huddle Luxury Never Deflate Air Mattress

Luxury Never Deflate Air Mattress
Now 15% Off

Pros

  • Personalised level of firmness
  • Integrated USB port and night light

Cons

  • Raised lip around edge may bother taller users

Score: 92/100

The ‘Never Deflate’ promise of our winning airbed means no more waking up in a deflated heap – not when it comes to this mattress, anyway. Once you’ve chosen one of the three firmness levels, the dual pump action works to inflate the mattress in a matter of minutes. The second pump then quietly maintains your required level of firmness while you snooze.

All our testers were impressed with how plumped up it remained throughout the night. It’s a firm choice for the whole family, with one panellist noting it was a secure sleeping surface for children and adults, “without any sinking or wobbling”.

When it’s time to pack it away, simply hit the deflate button and it will shrink down to fit inside the storage bag. It will certainly upgrade your camping trip to glamping, but you’ll need access to a power supply for the ‘Never Deflate’ tech to work its magic. But the integrated night light and USB port are a nice touch for campers.

Fortech Air Mattress - King

Pros

  • Easy to inflate
  • Spacious

Cons

  • Short lead

Score: 89/100

This large air mattress makes a seamless replacement for a traditional bed if you've just moved house, are going camping or need to put someone up at Christmas. “It quite literally elevated our camping experience, as it was about half a meter off the ground,” said one happy camper. Keep in mind, though, that it's quite large to cart around, so it may only be suitable if you have a large tent and you’re able to transport it with a car.

It holds air well, with one tester saying they only needed to re-pump once over a period of five days. It does self-inflate with an automatic electric pump, but you’ll need access to a mains socket or power pack. Otherwise, be sure to bring along a manual pump to avoid adding to the stresses of camp set-up.

Pros

  • Compact and storable
  • Thick and comfortable surface

Cons

  • Heavy

Score: 88/100

Another speedy, self-inflating air mattress, this time from popular sleep brand Silentnight, known for its comfy mattresses. That expertise is evident in the triple barrel design with built-in pillow (yes, really!) that creates optimum support and snugness. Our testers were happy with the level of comfort it offered, with many complimenting how “high-end” and “luxurious” it felt.

Some panellists struggled to fold the mattress back into the storage bag, though this is a universal experience for most blow-up mattresses. Still, it’s a reliable choice for getting a good night's sleep outside your standard bed. It includes an emergency repair patch if you face any punctures, too.

Pros

  • Easy-to-read instructions
  • inflated quickly and easily

Cons

  • Slightly less sleeping space due to headboard

Score: 86/100

If you’re hosting overnight guests but don’t have a spare bed, this tall, inflatable mattress, complete with a headboard is certainly the next best thing. Testers loved the added headboard as it stopped pillows from slipping off and really felt like a step up from a standard air bed.

It’s designed with 21 individual pillars of air to support your body throughout the night, plus an anti-roll rim to keep the outer edge strong and sturdy when you toss and turn.

Set-up is simple too, thanks to the built-in electric pump, and when you’re done, it all packs away neatly into the accompanying storage bag. It’s one for comfort-focused buyers who prefer performance over portability, as the large size and self-inflating pump mean it’s best for impressing guests at home.

Deluxe XL Airbed with Built in Pump

Pros

  • Quality finish
  • Comfortable and firm

Cons

  • No inflation gauge – users must guess

Score: 82/100

Another sturdy and comfy double airbed, this one comes with an internal pump for self-inflating and takes just four minutes from start to finish.

It’s made from a heavy-duty Tritech material, which is a polyester mesh encased within two layers of PVC to provide ultimate durability. Best of all, the base is waterproof, which is just what you need for sunny-turned-soggy camping trips.

It’s lined with internal horizontal beams to keep its shape and has a microbial treated surface to keep things fresh, too. Some of our panellists noticed minor deflation by morning, but this didn’t compromise the overall comfort or support.

Eurohike Double Airbed with Flocked Finish

UK Approved(Esquire,Red,HB,GH,Country Living,Prima)
Double Airbed with Flocked Finish

Pros

  • Packs down into a small size
  • Lightweight

Cons

  • Noisy when shifting position

Score: 70/100

This standard airbed from Eurohike may not have self-inflating technology or a headboard, but it does the job of providing a somewhat sturdy base to sleep on every now and again. It doesn’t come with a pump, so you’ll need to add one to your list, or hope one of your fellow campers has one if you're away.

It’s spacious enough for two people without feeling cramped, though some testers wished it provided a little more support. For less than £15, though, it’s hard to complain. All in all, a reliable budget-friendly choice for occasional use.

How we test air mattresses

how we test airbeds

We sent a range of airbeds and inflatable mattresses out to a panel of testers at the height of summer camping season and asked them to sleep on them for several nights before feeding back. We asked them whether the airbeds stayed fully inflated overnight and how comfortable they were to sleep on. We also asked about the noise of the pump (for auto-inflating beds) as well as the time that it took to inflate and deflate.

The beds were also scored on clarity of instructions, portability and how simple they were to repack.

Panel members shared their opinions with us via a detailed survey before our in-house experts analysed and collated the feedback and awarded each product an overall score.

Why trust the Good Housekeeping Institute

best air beds

We've been testing products at the Good Housekeeping Institute for over 100 years, so we know a thing or two about what makes a top-quality product. We also tested thousands of sleep products every year (over 3,000 this year so far), from the best pillows to the best mattress toppers.

When it comes to reviewing airbeds, our experts followed a series of rigorous protocols designed by our wellness and sleep lead tester, Kim Hawley. She ensures that our testing reflects how you would use the products at home (or on trips away) and makes sure we're asking all the right questions in our feedback forms for well-rounded responses.

Madeleine Evans, our lifestyle writer, then uses these reviews to create her write-ups. She's written hundreds of product reviews on a range of topics, from the latest beauty buys to new innovations in the sleep and wellness spaces. She’s been to a fair few festivals and camping holidays, so she also knows what to look for when it comes to the best air mattresses.

What features should I look for in an air mattress?

best air beds

Not all air mattresses are created equal. Inflatable mattresses come in a range of styles from simple Lilos to ones that look like a real bed with a headboard. So, here's what to think about before buying.

Material: If you’re planning on taking your air mattress into the great outdoors, look for one made from a tougher material such as high-quality PVC (a plastic) or vinyl, to ensure its base is more resistant to water and punctures.

Built-in pillows or headboards: For added comfort, an inflatable mattress with a built-in pillow is a great pick. Some even come with a headboard, making them a good choice for hosting overnight guests as they're not that far removed from a real bed.

Height: Some air mattresses are quite thin (making them more portable), while others can be as high as a standard mattress. Being further off the ground makes getting in and out of bed easier and if you’re sleeping outdoors, you’re less likely to feel the cold or any bumpy ground.

Built-in pumps: Air mattresses with built-in pumps are fantastic for camping as that’s one less thing you need to pack. Some pumps require electricity, while others are operated by foot (which can take a while), so check what your air mattress needs before setting off.
