8 best portable fans to keep you cool over summer, tested by experts
Stuffy trains and buses will be a breeze with one of these...

Every year, when the annual summer heatwave hits the UK, we go from moaning about the rain and cold to complaining about the heat and soaring temperatures. Because, let’s face it, we're just not built for it.
That's where the best portable fans can come in, helping to cool us down when we're out and about on public transport (we've spotted a lot on the Tube) or sending a lovely breeze over us while we sit at our desks. We've been busy testing them at the Good Housekeeping Institute and out and about, to find the best, most lightweight and versatile models.
What is the best portable fan?
Here are our experts’ favourite portable fans at a glance, but read on for our full reviews to find out how they did on test.
Do portable fans use a lot of electricity?
In short, no. Every handheld fan in this list scored well in our energy efficiency testing, generally costing around one penny for a total charge. Even the portable fans that need to be plugged in (such as our desk fan), use a fraction of the electricity that larger fans do as they are typically smaller.
Energy efficiency is just one of the tests we do in our lab, as well as taking the fans out and about with us for the week to see if they cool us down on the go. You'll find more detail on how we test below our reviews.
