Good Housekeeping

To deliver a truly fantastic cookout, you don’t just need good quality ingredients, all (and we mean ALL) the sides and sauces, and plenty of friends to feed… You also need the best kit for grilling, searing and locking in that mouthwatering smoky flavour.

Typically, charcoal and gas-powered grills have taken pole position in gardens across the country. But, if you’re upgrading or investing in your first grill, it may be time to consider one of the best electric BBQs. All if you have to do is plug in and turn on – so it's goodbye to frantically sourcing fuel for your last-minute alfresco gathering!

These are our top picks in one handy list but read on for our detailed reviews.

Best electric BBQs to buy now

We assess everything from assembly to heat distribution when testing electric BBQs at the Good Housekeeping Institute. The fun part (aka the grilling) involves cooking up a storm, including grilling meaty burgers, chicken and veggies.

And, of course, we taste it all, looking for a smoky flavour and moist texture. You’ll find a full breakdown of how we test under our reviews. If you’re not set on electric just yet, head to our BBQ buying guide to read about the pros and cons of each type.

Best electric BBQ

Weber Lumin Electric Grill Black (92010901)

UK Approved(Esquire,Red,HB,GH,Country Living,Prima)
Lumin Electric Grill Black (92010901)

Pros

  • Easy to move thanks to side handles
  • Steam function cooked vegetables evenly

Cons

  • ‘On’ indicator wasn’t very bright and may be difficult to see in direct sunlight
  • Instructions for smoking were confusing

Score: 92/100

Whether you need it to sear, charr, cook or grill, this electric BBQ aced every test in style. All our food, from corn on the cob to sausages, was evenly cooked, while our burgers had satisfying sear marks thanks to its top 315°C temperature (which it reached in a speedy 14 minutes, no less). It's compact, but its grill still comfortably accommodated four portions at a time.

Our expert found the indicator light hard to see when the sun was shining, and they didn’t rate its smoking ability when compared with the Ninja Woodfire below. There were some colder spots towards the very edge of the grill, too. But all in all, it’s a versatile investment (it also steams and has a 'keep warm' setting), especially for small gardens and grilling on-the-go.

If you’re after maximum portability, Weber also offers a compact version of this model, and a stand is available, too.

Runner-up electric BBQ

Ninja Woodfire Electric BBQ Grill & Smoker

UK Approved(Esquire,Red,HB,GH,Country Living,Prima)
Woodfire Electric BBQ Grill & Smoker

Pros

  • Smoker box was easy to remove, clean and refit
  • Lid and body remained cool when in use

Cons

  • Only reaches up to 260 degrees
  • Some cold spots in the bottom corners

Score: 88/100

For an electric BBQ that still masters a traditional smoky flavour, scroll no further. This Ninja’s integrated smoker box, which burns woodfire pellets, excelled on test, creating tender pulled pork with mouthwatering crackled skin in half the time it would take on a conventional BBQ.

That’s not all – it seared sirloin steak a treat and cooked both meat and vegan sausages in a decent time with a juicy middle. Unfortunately, this BBQ struggled a little to char burgers, resulting in a similar flavour to one that’s oven cooked. Our tester also noted that it took a slower 16 minutes to cook corn on the cob and, again, it lacked that alfresco-ready char factor.

It’s a multi-tasker though, boasting some of Ninja’s famous air frying settings, which produced crispy yet fluffy chips and even impressed with fairy cakes. If smoking meats and versatility are at the top of your summer agenda, then this model is a great choice.

Best electric BBQ with independent cooking zones

Weber Pulse 2000 Electric BBQ

UK Approved(Esquire,Red,HB,GH,Country Living,Prima)
Pulse 2000 Electric BBQ

Pros

  • LED temperature gauge is easy to read even in bright sunlight
  • Controls and BBQ lid didn’t get hot in use

Cons

  • You need a heatproof countertop or Weber stand
  • No side panels or keep-warm area

Score: 87/100

This tabletop electric BBQ comes with a premium price tag but it’s worth the investment if you have the funds. It boasts two grilling zones that you can adjust independently using the dials on the front panel. They changed the temperature quickly in testing, giving you better control over your cooking.

Our expert said it cooked chicken to near perfection, while burgers had nice sear lines. It lost marks when cooking meat-free alternatives as they were moist but lacked charring.

One standout feature is the connected app, which our expert described as a game-changer. You can connect four Weber temperature probes and use it to monitor cooking progress, thanks to alarms that ensure nothing overcooks. Goodbye dry meat, hello BBQ master.

Best electric BBQ for larger gatherings

Char-Broil SMART-E Electric Barbecue Grill

UK Approved(Esquire,Red,HB,GH,Country Living,Prima)
SMART-E Electric Barbecue Grill

Pros

  • Under BBQ storage cabinet offers plenty of extra space
  • Lockable wheels make it easy to move without compromising on stability

Cons

  • Took over two hours to assemble
  • Grates didn’t have effective non-stick

Score: 86/100

This large electric BBQ is an impressive bit of kit. Its steel grills and foldable side shelves are similar to those of a traditional BBQ, yet, unlike a gas or charcoal model, it has a speedy preheat time, reaching temperatures of up to 370°C in just 12 minutes for our experts.

Equipped with Char-Broil's TRU-infrared technology, this BBQ claims to distribute heat evenly across the grill, preparing food that’s 50% juicier. On test, it certainly delivered, performing best when cooking chicken and corn on the cob, barely dropping a mark thanks to its top charring and flavourful grilling.

Testers found the temperature control dial simple to use and appreciated the easy-to-read digital temperature display – it was clear, even in direct sun! They also liked the handy auto-clean feature, but while it undoubtedly helped proceedings, it didn’t eliminate all residue, so you may still need to give the grills a scrub for particularly stubborn bits of burnt-on food.

Best electric BBQ for versatility

Ninja Woodfire Electric Outdoor Oven

UK Approved(Esquire,Red,HB,GH,Country Living,Prima)
Woodfire Electric Outdoor Oven
Now 15% Off

Pros

  • Exterior remained cool
  • Easy to clean – burnt-on residue only needed a soak and a single wipe down

Cons

  • Only goes up to 370 degrees, which can’t rival most pizza ovens
  • Smoking took longer than instructions claim

Score: 86/100

This is the second product from Ninja on our list and it once again proved that the brand is all about versatility when it comes to outdoor cooking. It's a lightweight oven-style design that does lots of heavy lifting with eight functions in one, from traditional BBQ grilling, to roasting and making pizzas.

Of course, we had to try the pizza oven function, and each of our three pizzas emerged with a crunchy crust and a soft doughy centre, while the cheese was well-melted and gooey. Yum!

Back to the BBQ-ing and our testers enjoyed evenly grilled burgers, sausages and kebabs, although they lacked some charring. And when cooking smoked pork shoulder and brisket, the oven produced tasty meat but needed a while to achieve that all-important pull-apart texture.

Overall, testers found this multi-tasker easy to use and they appreciated the handy chimes that remind you to flip food halfway through grilling. Plus, if you’re stuck for recipe inspo, Ninja provides a whole guide to get you started.

Best smart electric BBQ

Char-Broil Evolve Electric Grill

UK Approved(Esquire,Red,HB,GH,Country Living,Prima)
Evolve Electric Grill
Now 19% Off

Pros

  • Keep-warm rack for indirect cooking
  • Handles and lid remained cool while the BBQ was in use
  • Good safety, cleaning and troubleshooting advice in the instructions

Cons

  • Took nearly two hours to assemble
  • Food took longer to cook than on a gas BBQ

Score: 85/100

This BBQ frees up time to catch up with your guests, as its app lets you control and set the temperature anywhere between 90 degrees and 370 degrees. This means you won’t need to hover over the grill quite as much. Try this feature out before you’re playing host though; testers took a while to decipher the instructions, especially when it came to figuring out the difference between the current (ACT) temperature and the desired (SET) one. But otherwise, the app boasts some good tips and a few recipes to get you started.

After easily igniting the BBQ, our testers used the dual cooking zones to grill burgers and sausages. Both meaty and plant-based options were cooked just right wherever they were placed, and the same was true of chicken and steak.

Once you’ve wowed the crowd with your feast, clean-up is simple thanks to the auto-clean system, which started at the push of a button on test.

George Foreman Indoor Outdoor BBQ Electric Grill

UK Approved(Esquire,Red,HB,GH,Country Living,Prima)
Indoor Outdoor BBQ Electric Grill
Now 33% Off

Pros

  • Thermostat was easy to read
  • Enough cooking space for up to 15 portions

Cons

  • A few cold spots across the grill
  • Removing the grill plate was fiddly

Score: 84/100

Claiming to remove up to 42% fat compared to other models, this George Foreman is an excellent choice for anyone looking for a healthier grill. It features specially angled plates to drain away fat and an integrated drip plate to collect the excess grease.

Everything from our burgers to our veggie kebabs cooked nicely and had a lovely flavour; however, they weren’t that charred or evenly browned. The chicken breasts took a while to cook on the inside too, so make sure to check their internal temperature or give them a few extra minutes when grilling.

If it’s raining, don't worry, you don’t need to call off your BBQ – you can simply bring this grill indoors. Cleaning was a stand-out test too. It was straightforward and quick thanks to non-stick plates which were easy to wipe without any scrubbing needed – a key feature in our eyes, especially for frequent grillers.

how we test electric bbqs

How we test electric BBQs

Before we jump straight into the grilling, we check each BBQ’s heat distribution. This involves taking temperature readings across the lid and handle to check they're safe to touch during use. We then place bread across the grill to see how evenly it toasts – particularly charred pieces will highlight any hot spots, while lighter slices denote colder patches.

Then, we get to the fun part. We cook everything from meat and vegan sausages and burgers, chicken breasts and steaks, to corn on the cob and vegetable kebabs on each grill, checking for sear marks and seeing how evenly the food browns.

how we test electric bbqs

We then taste everything to check for smoky flavour and succulent texture (and to make sure that all the food is cooked through). If there are side burners, we also test how well these can boil water and milk.

After all the fun is over, we assess how easy each model is to clean, awarding a high score for grills that require little scrubbing.

Finally, we assess the overall design, ease of use and instructions, looking for BBQs with clearly labelled controls, helpful features and detailed cooking tips.

Is an electric BBQ any good?

As their name suggests, electric BBQs use mains power. This means there’s no need for gas canisters, heavy bags of charcoal, firewood or kindling – so you don't have to plan ahead, making spontaneous BBQs possible.

A different power source doesn’t equate to a dramatically different cooking experience either. Electric BBQs heat up quickly – most models on test were ready to cook in under 15 minutes. This is because, like gas BBQs, they don’t reach the sizzling 1,000 degree heat you get with a charcoal grill, peaking instead at around 350°C. And what you lose in firepower, you gain in precision; electric BBQs offer far more control, as you can select the exact temperature you want to cook at.

When it comes to taste, electric BBQs can’t quite compete with charcoal, but our testers found they still sealed in flavour and charred food well. There are ways around this too; if smokiness is at the top of your agenda, consider the Ninja Woodfire Smoke & Grill as this uses small woodfire pellets to replicate that classic smoky BBQ taste.

It’s not just set-up that’s speedy, either. Electric BBQs are also easier to clean, as you don’t need to dispose of gas canisters or used charcoal. The Char-Broil Smart-E BBQ and Char-Broil Evolve Electric even boast a self-cleaning mode and, although it doesn’t remove all residue, our testers appreciated the help.

Just be sure to invest in a suitable extension cord (or check that you have a well-placed socket) to avoid any plug issues when it’s finally time to fire up the barbie. But this makes them well-suited to smaller gardens with easy indoor access. In particular, the Weber Lumin Electric BBQ and the Ninja mentioned above, are ideal if you’re looking for something to use in tighter spaces or on the go, thanks to their compact design.

The verdict: What is the best electric BBQ?

Our top electric BBQ for this summer is Weber’s Lumin Electric Grill, which wowed our experts by achieving tasty results and satisfying sear marks on most of our food.

It’s a pricey buy though, so we recommend Ninja’s Woodfire Electric Grill as a more affordable option that comes with lots of versatility – it's excellent for smoking meats and can even air fry.
