The best coverless duvets for taking the hassle out of changing the sheets
Wash day won't feel like a workout with our tried and tested all-in-one duvets

Changing your bedding can sometimes feel like a real workout and even the best duvets will leave you wrangling them into a fresh cover. But, here to take the hassle out of this weekly (or fortnightly if we're being honest) chore are the best coverless duvets.
Relatively new to the market, our experts at the Good Housekeeping Institute were keen to see if they really deliver the convenience and comfort they promise. So, we recruited a panel of readers to try some of the market-leading brands at home and also put them to the test in our lab.
Here are our top picks at a glance but scroll on for everything you need to know about these bedroom game-changers.
What is a coverless duvet?
These all-in-one solutions come with a soft cover sewn in, so you never have to worry about changing your duvet cover again.
Unlike traditional duvets, which usually have to be dry-cleaned every few months, they're machine-washable for maximum convenience. Many can also be popped in the tumble dryer as well.
Are coverless duvets worth it?
If you struggle with changing your bedding, or it's simply one of those chores you're always putting off, they're certainly worth it. In fact, they have multiple benefits:
- They're more hygienic as they can be washed regularly, removing any allergens.
- They're also more cost effective, saving on trips to the dry cleaners and spending on new duvet covers.
- They're space-saving, as you can say goodbye to piles of duvet covers in your cupboards. Some even come with their own bags for easy storage.
They're particularly handy for younger children and teenagers who may be prone to spillages, as well as for camping trips and travel where bedding can often get muddy, or for anyone who just needs a helping hand with their laundry (read: students). Some people also like to use them in guest bedrooms, as they can be easily freshened up before visitors arrive.
Can you get different designs and togs?
Yes, there are a wide selection of colours and designs available on the market, from florals to ginghams. Just bear in mind that you'll want to hold onto your duvet for a couple of years, so avoid anything you'll think you'll tire of quickly. A classic stripe or neutral block colour is always a safe pick.
Many coverless duvets also come in a range of togs – a light 4.5 tog one will make the best summer duvet, while a weightier 10.5 tog option will make the best winter duvet. They also come in a range of sizes from single to super king. Note that higher tog, super king options will be more of a squeeze for your washing machine, so read the manufacturer's advice before buying.
How often should you wash a coverless duvet?
When it comes to washing, always follow the manufacturer's instructions, but generally, you should wash your coverless duvet every one to two weeks, in the same way as the rest of your bedding.
“We’d recommend more frequent washing compared to a regular duvet as it comes into direct contact with the skin,” says Danielle Mason, Head of Product Development at The Fine Bedding Company. “We’d therefore advise washing your coverless duvet every two weeks (or weekly, depending on how often you like to wash your bedding) to ensure a hygienic bedroom environment (avoiding the build up of dirt, dead skin cells, dust mites and makeup).”
Most brands recommend washing between 30 and 40C.
How we test
We asked a panel of 12 testers to put three market-leading brands to the test at home, sleeping with them for four weeks and feeding back on comfort, design and breathability.
In the GHI lab, each duvet is first assessed for overall quality, construction and size. We then wash and dry them three times, according to the manufacturer’s guidelines, checking for any shrinkage or change in appearance. Finally, we measure any colour fade using our specialist DigiEye machine. You'll find our list of tried and tested duvets below.
We've also included a selection of duvets that have picked out by our homes team, to offer you plenty of choice, depending on your décor and budget. These are listed below our tried and tested duvets. They haven't been tested in the lab, but our team know what they're looking for when it comes to quality.
