There’s nothing quite like the feeling of firing up the grill when the sun comes out. So, if yours is starting to look a little weathered or isn't giving you the char you desire, it may be time to invest in a new model.

The best gas BBQs tend to be quick and easy to ignite and maintain a consistent heat, so are a good pick if you want even results. But where to start? There’s a lot to consider. From how many people you’re feeding to storage space, not to mention the reassurance that it will cook up tasting food every time.

Price can also vary considerably, so the Good Housekeeping Institute has put a wide range of gas BBQs to the test, to bring you the best on the market. These are their top-rated grills at a glance, but keep scrolling for everything you need to know before shopping.

Best gas BBQs to buy now

We've tested every BBQ on our list to the same protocols, rating assembly time, heat distribution, and of course, grilling performance. We cook up a menu of burgers, sausages, veggies and more, taste-testing each as we go. We also judge design, ease of use and product information. Best gas BBQ

Weber Genesis® EP-335W Gas Barbecue

UK Approved(Esquire,Red,HB,GH,Country Living,Prima)
Genesis® EP-335W Gas Barbecue

Pros

  • One of the side tables folds down to make it more compact for storage
  • Comes with a recipe book with lots of inspiration
  • Has built-in storage below the grill

Cons

  • Cleaning method suggested (and the best one tried in testing) involves the Weber Barbecue Brush, which is sold separately
  • Stainless steel finish shows fingerprints and greasy marks easily

Score: 92/100

The ultimate gas griller for this summer is Weber’s latest model. The large, three-burner grill has a dedicated ‘Sear Burner’ – essentially a power booster – for when you want to achieve those all-important grill and sear marks on your meat.

This breezed through all our tests, delivering perfectly cooked, juicy burgers, steak that was finished better than anything we could manage in a frying pan, and a whole roast chicken that was moist and tender. The only thing we could fault was the sausages, which weren’t as evenly browned due to the size of the grill bars – but that’s us being picky. A built-in digital thermometer makes cooking easier too.

There’s no denying its size, and its weight means you’ll probably want to find a permanent home for it. However, considering its price and fantastic performance, it’s a grill you’ll want to show off and put to good use at every opportunity.

Char-Broil Professional Core 4 Burner

UK Approved(Esquire,Red,HB,GH,Country Living,Prima)
Professional Core 4 Burner

Pros

  • Self-assembly was easy
  • CharBroil’s MADE2MATCH system can be added for increased storage and extra cooking functions
  • Integrated bottle opener

Cons

  • Sausages took slightly longer than we’d have liked

Score: 91/100

This BBQ aced our tests, impressing with its ease of assembly and four burners that allow you to create different temperature zones and cook various foods at once. The grills also have built-in infrared technology, ensuring even heat distribution.

Unsurprisingly, all our food was expertly cooked – it scored full marks for its moist-yet-charred chicken and speedy steak. It is sizeable but has a side hob that offers an additional cooking surface and in-built gas storage.

The lid’s temperature gauge is easy to read, as are the control knobs, and the handle remained cool to the touch throughout. But opening and closing the lid does require some strength, as it’s on the heavy side. Given its top-notch culinary skills, however, the effort is likely worth it.

Joint runner-up gas BBQ and best five burner gas BBQ

Whistler Bibury Five Burner

UK Approved(Esquire,Red,HB,GH,Country Living,Prima)
Bibury Five Burner

Pros

  • Can be installed as part of an outdoor kitchen or used as a mobile BBQ
  • Lots of accessories included and more available to buy
  • Plenty of prep and storage space

Cons

  • Large and heavy
  • Ceramic back burner can be difficult to light in humid conditions

Score 91/100

An excellent crowd-feeder, this five-burner BBQ has multiple cooking zones and uniform heat distribution, which produced pleasing results. It scored full marks cooking corn on the cob, vegetable kebabs and steak, and only dropped one mark on our sausage and burger tests. The accompanying rotisserie accessory also shone, cooking our chicken perfectly in under two hours.

This model requires mains electricity, as do its built-in LED lights, limiting where it can be positioned. Arriving pre-built, you can also choose to buy this BBQ integrated into one of Whistler’s outdoor kitchens. The stainless steel design shows up dirt easily and it can get fiddly to clean, but overall this is a premium buy.

Outback Jupiter 4 Gas/Charcoal Hybrid BBQ

UK Approved(Esquire,Red,HB,GH,Country Living,Prima)
Jupiter 4 Gas/Charcoal Hybrid BBQ

Pros

  • Large temperature gauge in the hood was easy to read
  • Handle remained fairly cool

Cons

  • Large drip tray was tricky to wash

Score: 90/100

Available in a variety of colours, this BBQ can match your garden furniture. But that’s not all, it’s versatile too – as well as four gas burners it has a charcoal basket, and you can remove the central griddle and cook with the likes of a wok instead. Because of this, you’ll need to take care when cleaning, as our tester found the plate could dislodge easily and fall into the burners.

We liked its large control knobs, removable cutting board, built-in shelves, tool hooks and the magnetic bottle opener. But note that you’ll need to store the gas canister separately.

The food itself? Well, its porcelain hood allowed for entirely even heat distribution across the grill, so everything cooked well. In fact, it produced the best vegetable kebabs of all the BBQs we tested.

Best portable gas BBQ

Campingaz Attitude 2go CV

UK Approved(Esquire,Red,HB,GH,Country Living,Prima)
Attitude 2go CV

Pros

  • Large control knob that was easy to use
  • Has a storage basket for its gas canister

Cons

  • Pork sausages cooked unevenly

Score 87/100

Another excellent BBQ, this portable design will work well for small gardens or avid campers. Fitting the gas canister was simple – it’s only compatible with Campingaz’ own canisters though – while the removable grill plates make cleaning easy.

Built-in handholds help with carrying its 13kg weight, while its small stature didn’t limit its cooking capabilities. Its large temperature gauge was clearly readable and although you can’t create cooking zones, its one burner was powerful enough to distribute heat evenly. Meat-free burgers, chicken and steaks cooked best.

Char-Broil Essential 3G 3 Burner Gas Barbecue

UK Approved(Esquire,Red,HB,GH,Country Living,Prima)
Essential 3G 3 Burner Gas Barbecue

Pros

  • Cleaning setting burns dirt to ash within 15 minutes and then you can just brush it out
  • Exterior lid remained fairly cool (57.6 degrees)

Cons

  • Fitting the gas pipe was difficult
  • Burners aren’t visible when cooking – it's not easy to tell when they’re lit

Score: 84/100

This gas BBQ comes with a more affordable price tag than the other Char-Broil model on our list, but it deserves attention. Three burners, plus a side burner and side tables for preparing food, offer plenty of space for grilling a feast for up to six people. This model also features ‘TRU-Infrared Technology’, which the brand claims will make your food up to 50% juicier.

On test, we found cooking took some getting used to. The infrared technology involves a metal plate under the grill to distribute heat more quickly and evenly, but if you’re not used to the tech and don’t have one of our best smart meat thermometers on hand, you run the risk of overcooking your food. After a few goes, however, we achieved meat with good char marks that was also full of flavour.

George Foreman 3 Burner Gas BBQ GFGBBQ3BW

UK Approved(Esquire,Red,HB,GH,Country Living,Prima)
3 Burner Gas BBQ GFGBBQ3BW

Pros

  • Has hooks for hanging BBQ cooking tools
  • Contains an in-lid temperature gauge

Cons

  • The grease trap needed emptying and washing after each use

Score: 82/100

A good choice if you’re after a medium-sized BBQ. This is big enough to feed a family and will fit in most gardens. The wooden-effect shelving will coordinate nicely with wooden outdoor furniture too, but it doesn’t fold down, so you’ll need a decent-sized shed or garage to stow it in.

With three burners, you can create different cooking zones and we found the grill had good heat distribution. That said, there were some inconsistencies with cooking on test. Our sausages didn’t brown uniformly, for example, suggesting some cold spots. Once you familiarise yourself with the grill, however, you’ll find where to place food for optimum results. It cleaned up nicely and is great value for money.

Note, its two wheels don’t lock, so we suggest giving it a miss if your garden slopes.

Argos Home Deluxe 6 Burner With Side Burner Gas BBQ

UK Approved(Esquire,Red,HB,GH,Country Living,Prima)
Deluxe 6 Burner With Side Burner Gas BBQ

Pros

  • Assembly instructions are easy to follow
  • Lid remains cool to the touch even after long periods of barbecuing

Cons

  • Burners are quite noisy

Score: 82/100

This large six-burner BBQ is a great piece of kit for summer entertaining. Its grill measures just shy of a metre wide, making it easy to prepare a feast’s worth of food – and to keep your meat separate from your veggies.

Speaking of the food, this BBQ excelled at cooking burgers (both regular and meat free), leaving great char marks and plenty of juiciness inside. Our chicken breasts were similarly tasty. Our testers also liked the handy side burners for preparing a variety of sides.

It wasn't all fine dining, though – sausages charred unevenly, while steak became fairly dry. A couple of practice runs before your first party should get you used to the grill’s quirks though. And cleaning was easy, so you can catch up with guests rather than standing over the BBQ for any longer than necessary.

Best compact gas BBQ

Weber Traveler LP Gas Barbecue Black

UK Approved(Esquire,Red,HB,GH,Country Living,Prima)
Traveler LP Gas Barbecue Black

Pros

  • Hydraulic pistons slow the BBQ down into trolley format, so you don’t get your fingers caught
  • Makes barbecuing more versatile and accessible

Cons

  • Only takes one small canister, so make sure you have spares

Score: 79/100

Frequent campers, meet your new sidekick. This one-burner has a portable frame that pops up easily thanks to a pull and lock mechanism. Plus, the compact frame should fit into most car boots (although compare the measurements if you have a small car) for easy transportation to the great outdoors.

It cooks well too. Our beef burgers were nicely seared with moisture locked in, and our chicken breasts were deliciously succulent. Sausages were more inconsistent though; while they cooked beautifully inside, they didn’t char evenly. Our testers other cooking complaint was a lack of rendered fat on the sirloin steaks, but that’s a small niggle.

Note, the lid became quite hot on test, so watch your hands and always use the dedicated handle. Be sure to allow time for the BBQ to cool down before hitting the road again too.

Outback Omega 250 2-Burner Gas BBQ

UK Approved(Esquire,Red,HB,GH,Country Living,Prima)
Omega 250 2-Burner Gas BBQ

Pros

  • Removable side table for easy long-term storage
  • Fairly easy to clean

Cons

  • BBQ lid can get very hot

Score: 79/100

Despite being one of the cheapest BBQs on this list, our testers were cheered by its easy-to-use controls and good cooking ability. Its most impressive performance came with our sirloin steaks which were seared and cooked to a beautiful medium-rare consistency, whereas sausages, veggies and chicken breasts were all succulent but lacking consistent colour.

Our expert also liked the side burner, which provided ample room for cooking sauces or preparing side dishes. However, there's no storage space for the gas canister when the BBQ isn’t in use and we’d recommend purchasing a cover if you're planning to store the BBQ outside to keep it in pristine condition for longer. A great buy for small gardens and households.

VonHaus 4+1 Burner Gas BBQ

UK Approved(Esquire,Red,HB,GH,Country Living,Prima)
4+1 Burner Gas BBQ

Pros

  • The side burner has a cover so it can be used for prepping if not needed for cooking
  • The main grill bars are close enough together that small sausages and skewers didn’t fall through

Cons

  • BBQ is quite low (32.5 inches off the ground) so might not suit taller people
  • Must be stored inside

Score: 76/100

At under £220, this is a fantastic pick for an affordable family BBQ. Assembly took almost two hours and was a little fiddly, but once built, the burner was quick to ignite, and the grill quickly reached a good cooking temperature.

Meaty sausages and burgers cooked well but our veggie alternatives lacked crispiness. The temperature of the BBQ fluctuated quite a bit when cooking a whole chicken too, which meant we had to monitor its progress throughout the hour and 20-minute cooking time. We’d also have liked each of the four burners to have separate ignition points, but this isn’t a deal breaker.

Once we’d served up our feast, the removable three-piece grill was easy to clean, and the two castor wheels made it easy to store the BBQ away.

how we test gas bbqs

How we test gas BBQs

Testing BBQs at the Good Housekeeping Institute is tasty business. The first thing we look at is a grill's heat distribution. We take temperature readings from across the lid (and the handle to check it’s safe), and place bread across the grill to see how evenly it toasts.

Then we get cooking. To judge each model's grilling skills, we use a menu of both meat and vegan sausages and burgers, along with corn on the cob, vegetable kebabs, chicken breasts and steaks – and, of course, we taste them all just to make sure they have that beautiful, smoky flavour. Our tester also looks at searing marks and how evenly the food has browned.

Finally, we check how well any side burners boil water and milk. Each BBQ is then scored according to its performance, ease of use, design and product information.

Why you should trust the Good Housekeeping Institute

We’ve been testing products at the Good Housekeeping Institute for over 100 years, so we know exactly what separates a good product from a middling one. Our senior homes and lifestyle writer, Megan Geall, has written about hundreds of household products and has hunted out the best gas BBQs by visiting brands, scouting out new launches, attending food festivals, and cooking up her own feasts at home.

Every gas BBQ in this list has been rigorously reviewed by our testing team against our detailed protocols, so you can shop with confidence.

How to choose a BBQ

There’s lots to consider when investing in a BBQ, so we’ve broken down the features we think are worth keeping in mind.

Number of burners: The more burners you have, the more cooking zones you can create by setting each one to a different temperature. This is handy if you’re preparing multiple dishes at once.

The BBQs on our list range from one burner to five. There’s no specific amount that's better, but be wary that more burners do equate to bigger BBQs.

Some BBQs also have a side burner, which tends to be used for preparing food that you wouldn’t grill. These expand your BBQ’s cooking capabilities but aren’t a necessity.

Storage: This is three-fold. You need to think about where you’ll keep your BBQ in the garden, where you’ll store it over winter and what on-board storage there is.

Some BBQs can stay outdoors if they have an adequate cover, but in colder months or bad weather, most will need to be moved inside. If you can store the gas canister in the BBQ itself, that will make it more compact to pack away.

Then consider what you’ll need while cooking. Some have shelves or hooks for tools, so you can keep everything you need nearby.

Side trays: Sitting either side of the grill, these are helpful for preparing and storing food while you’re cooking. Make sure you don’t keep food that needs refrigerating out for too long before you put it on the BBQ though.

Most BBQs have one or two, and if there is a side burner, look to see if there’s a cover that will convert it into a workspace. They add extra size to your BBQ but some fold down, which helps if space is at a premium.

Grill design: As well as the main grill, some BBQs have warming grates built into the lid. These secondary racks can be helpful for expanding your cooking area or keeping some food hot while you continue preparing the rest.

Some of the BBQs on our list also have removable grill panels so you can use pans and woks on the burners.

Additional features: Generally, these are nice to haves, but it’s worth thinking about what else comes in the box. For example, one of our joint runners-up, the Whistler Bibury 5 Burner Gas BBQ, comes with a rotisserie system that can be added to the BBQ.

Cleaning tools such as scrapers are particularly helpful too, as then you can scrub your BBQ safe in the knowledge that you’re using the right equipment.

Gas bottles: All gas BBQs use propane gas rather than butane as it has a lower boiling point and therefore functions effectively all year round.

Knowing how often you’ll need to replace your cannister is the tricky part as it varies according to your model of BBQ, the number of burners, and the heat setting you use most. As a rough idea, Homebase says that a 10kg gas bottle used for a 4-burner BBQ should last about 14 hours – that’s enough for a fair few summer evenings gathered around the barbie.

What are the benefits of a gas BBQ?

A gas BBQ gives you control over your cooking. You can alter the temperature, which makes it easier to grill more delicate foods such as vegetables and fish.

They heat up more quickly than charcoal BBQs and tend to be easier to clean. Most gas BBQs just need to be run at a high temperature for a set time before you can scrape off any burnt-on food. Then you’ll just need to deal with a grease tray, rather than disposing of charcoal.

It won't offer the same smoky flavour or reach the same high temperatures as a charcoal BBQ, so may not brown and sear your food in the same way. However, the lower temperatures of a gas BBQ are an advantage if you want to cook joints of meat for a longer period using rotisserie accessories.

Note: There are hybrid BBQs available, offering both gas and charcoal in one, like this good value Outback model on our list.
