Whether it's the perfect Goldilocks mattress (not too soft, not too firm), some sumptuous silk pyjamas or a comfy pair of earplugs to drown out your partner's snores, getting your sleep set-up just right is key to a quality night's rest.

So, we've spent three months poking, prodding and pulling apart the latest releases in the Good Housekeeping Institute lab, as well as sending them out to our reader panel to curl up with night after night, to find the ultimate buys for your bedroom.

We smeared dressing gowns and blankets with everything from foundation to mustard before seeing how easily stains were lifted; we bounced on 292 mattresses to test their firmness; and we sat in a lot of darkened rooms to try out every kind of soothing eye mask. It's a tough job...

How we test sleep products

To find the best sleep buys, our experts assess the quality and design of each product in the lab. They put them through rigorous wash tests to check for shrinkage and any changes in quality or colour vibrancy. Where relevant, we also send out samples to at-home testers, who trial them for a minimum of two weeks to see how they perform night after night. They share detailed feedback, commenting on comfort, breathability, ease of use and, crucially, performance. Our experts then collate all the feedback and scores to reveal the best in test.
