The best sulphate-free shampoos for a gentler clean, tested by 580 women
Keep your hair clean without this harsh chemical

Most shampoos contain sulphates, as they help to create a rich lather, resulting in a deep clean. However, they can irritate and dry out scalps, which isn't ideal for those with sensitive skin. The best sulphate-free haircare products claim to take a gentler approach to sloughing away grime, and cleaning thoroughly without stripping away moisture and colour.
Luckily, they're easier to find these days as they've become more widely available. To see which are worth a place on your bathroom shelf, the Good Housekeeping Institute tested 44 leading sulphate-free shampoos with the help of over 500 panellists who had a range of hair types.
Panellists used the shampoos as part of their routine for a minimum of two weeks before giving us detailed feedback on everything from packaging design to performance. You’ll find a full breakdown of how we test below our reviews.
But, first, it's time to upgrade hair wash night...
