The best sulphate-free shampoos for a gentler clean, tested by 580 women

Keep your hair clean without this harsh chemical

best sulphate free shampoo

Most shampoos contain sulphates, as they help to create a rich lather, resulting in a deep clean. However, they can irritate and dry out scalps, which isn't ideal for those with sensitive skin. The best sulphate-free haircare products claim to take a gentler approach to sloughing away grime, and cleaning thoroughly without stripping away moisture and colour.

Luckily, they're easier to find these days as they've become more widely available. To see which are worth a place on your bathroom shelf, the Good Housekeeping Institute tested 44 leading sulphate-free shampoos with the help of over 500 panellists who had a range of hair types.

Panellists used the shampoos as part of their routine for a minimum of two weeks before giving us detailed feedback on everything from packaging design to performance. You’ll find a full breakdown of how we test below our reviews.

But, first, it's time to upgrade hair wash night...

Absolut Repair Molecular

Pros

  • Doesn’t cause redness or irritation
  • Lathers well

Cons

  • Takes a few times to fully rinse out

Score: 92/100

Heat styling, colouring and environmental aggressors can all have a negative impact on the molecular composition of hair, resulting in breakage, dullness and dryness. And once the damage is done, it can be hard to know how to nurse your locks back to life again. Well, this reparative shampoo from L’Oréal is a great place to start, helping to replenish and strengthen strands. It proved very effective on test, with the majority of panellists agreeing that their hair felt stronger and smoother after use.

The power lies in the peptides – these clever proteins get to work inside the hair fibres, helping to fuse broken bonds and prevent further fallout. They help restore structure and movement to hair, for that all-important swish. Indeed, panellists said it immediately left their hair feeling softer and said you only need to use a small amount to achieve smoother strands.

Aveeno Smoothing Rosewater and Chamomile Scalp Soothing Shampoo for Frizzy Hair 300ml

UK Approved(Esquire,Red,HB,GH,Country Living,Prima)
Smoothing Rosewater and Chamomile Scalp Soothing Shampoo for Frizzy Hair 300ml

Pros

  • Smoothed frizzy hair
  • Good at detangling

Cons

  • Weighed thin hair down slightly

Score: 78/100

Wake up and smell the roses, quite literally, with this beautifully scented shampoo from Aveeno. The scent was the key USP for our panellists with one saying it smelt expensive. There’s no luxury price tag attached here though, thankfully, as this one is less than a tenner.

It also leaves hair feeling as good as it smells, thanks to its smoothing properties. “My hair felt noticeably softer straight after using,” said one pleased panel member. As with Aveeno’s entire skin and hair range, the colloidal oats are the star ingredient here – their protein-rich properties help reduce breakage and deeply hydrate dry strands. Note that it might not be one for those with thinner hair as some found it weighed their locks down a little.

Umberto Giannini Curl Jelly Wash Shampoo

UK Approved(Esquire,Red,HB,GH,Country Living,Prima)
Curl Jelly Wash Shampoo

Pros

  • Left hair deeply cleansed
  • Softening

Cons

  • Wasn’t effective at detangling

Score: 75/100

Curly hair tends to be naturally drier as it’s harder for natural oils to make their way down the shaft through those beautiful twists and turns. And you don’t want sulphates drying it out any further, so we recommend this sulphate-free shampoo, which is specially formulated for those with curls.

Alongside a deep clean, the vitamin B5-infused formula adds a boost of moisture and softness to lengths. It helps refine coils too, with testers telling us it’s extremely light and didn’t weigh hair down. The only gripe from our panel members was the slightly clinical fragrance.

How we test sulphate-free shampoos

best glossier products

We recruited 580 at-home testers to rinse their way through 44 sulphate-free shampoo brands.

They gave detailed feedback on how easy the product was to apply and distribute through their hair, how well it lathered (if applicable) and washed out and, most importantly, how it left their hair looking and feeling after drying.

In the Good Housekeeping Institute beauty lab, our experts used a Dia-Stron machine to measure how easily a comb moved through hair switches before and after each shampoo was applied and washed out. They also applied artificial sebum to the switches and used a Sebumeter – designed to measure oil and sebum levels – to judge how effectively each shampoo cleaned strands.

Why trust the Good Housekeeping Institute?

Is sulphate-free shampoo better for hair?

A good sulphate-free shampoo will give you clean, conditioned hair without weighing it down or leaving it looking too wispy.

Katie Allen, founder of boutique London hair salon MAYFIVE, recommends using it on coloured hair to keep your shade looking vibrant for longer, and naturally drier hair, including curly styles.

“Shampoos that are heavy in sulphates can result in colour fade and frizzy hair,” she explains. “Sulphate-free shampoos aren’t as abrasive and will cleanse hair without ruffling cuticles unnecessarily.”

If you suffer from a scalp condition, such as dandruff, Katie suggests using a product containing sulphates until it clears. You can then move to something gentler.

Katie’s top tip: For the most effective results, wet your hair thoroughly and squeeze a small amount of shampoo into your palms. Rub your hands together to create a lather, before applying it directly to the roots and massaging it through. If it isn’t lathering sufficiently, add a bit more water.

Will a sulphate-free shampoo still clean hair?

Don’t worry, sulphate-free shampoos will still rid your hair of all unwanted residue. You're bound to notice less foaming lather, but this doesn't affect performance. Instead, alternative cleansing agents are used to provide a deep clean.

The verdict on the best sulphate-free shampoos

For long-lasting smoothness and more manageable locks, look no further than our winner, Kérastase Discipline Bain Fluidealiste. It does cost over £20, though, so for affordability, we recommend the OGX Anti-Frizz Shampoo, which leaves out any nasties, and comes in at under £10.

Pureology's Hydrate Shampoo scored top in our lab for maintaining colour vibrancy, so it’s a good pick for those with dyed hair.
