The 12 best lip balms, according to 380 panellists and 10 years of testing
You may be surprised by the winner

Of all the questions we've been asked in the Good Housekeeping Institute beauty lab over the past 10 years, perhaps the most common is: what’s the best lip balm money can buy?
So, our experts carried out an exhaustive test of all the products on the market – from the innovative new launches to the legends that lined our school bags (and now our work bags) – to find the best lip balms to buy now.
If you don’t have time to read our deep dive, we’ve listed out our top-rated pout-perfectors below. But if you want to know how your new beauty purchase really works (and why), read on for the full lip balm low-down.

Do you really need a lip balm?
Chapped lips are, contrary to popular belief, not solely a winter problem. The skin on your lips is delicate, so it’s naturally more prone to dryness, making a lip balm an everyday essential.
Do lip balms dry out lips?
No, they do the opposite. They're made with nourishing blends of oils, butters and other hydrating ingredients. Dry, cracked and peeling lips should be soothed in an instant without adding stickiness or leaving a bad taste in your mouth. As part of our review, we ran a lab test to see which ones hydrated lips the most.
GHI tip: run a soft toothbrush over your lips after brushing your teeth two to three times a week to remove excess skin cells, and then lather on your lip balm to lock in the moisture overnight.
Does lip balm expire?
It’s one of those staples that lies in the bottom of your handbag and seems to last forever. But, like all cosmetics, lip balm does have an expiry date. As a rule of thumb, you should replace your balm every year. The ingredients may still work after this time, but the natural oils and butters can start to deteriorate because of continual contact with the air.
The PAO (period after opening) symbol will give you the best indication of the exact expiry date for your product. If it expires in less than 30 months, you’ll see an egg timer symbol or an exact date on the packaging.
Are lip balms safe?
In short, yes. You may have heard about safety concerns relating to petroleum jelly (a common ingredient in lip balm) and carcinogens, but you can rest assured that all lip balms sold in the UK meet strict safety standards.
How we test lip balms
We recruited a panel of over 380 at-home testers to try dozens of market-leading lip balms over a four-week period, before asking them to provide detailed feedback. We asked each panellist to assess the lip balm on how easy it was to apply, the texture and how well it hydrated and protected their lips from dryness.
Back in the beauty lab, our experts also assessed the texture of each balm as well as how often they needed to be reapplied throughout the day. They then measured how effective each product was at maintaining the skin's protective moisture barrier over a six-hour period after application.
