12 best toastie makers and sandwich toasters for perfect toasties
Nothing beats a melting cheese and bean toastie, or cheese and Marmite, or cheese and...

The best toastie makers turn the humble sandwich into a crisp, golden, cheesy masterpiece, elevating lunchtimes. Crunchy, toasted bread and warm, gooey cheese are a surefire way to every food-lover's heart, but why stop there?
Toasted sandwich makers can unlock a whole new world of recipes and creations, from paninis to waffles, and offer unlimited flavour combinations (including these curried bubble and squeak toasties). All you need is the right gadget to take them to the next level.
So, in service of the beloved lunchtime treat, the Good Housekeeping Institute tested 44 sandwich toasters, creating batch after batch of cheese, ham and tomato toasties – and yes, we ate them all! – to find the top grillers for gourmet results every time.
If you’re replacing an existing sandwich toaster, there are plenty of places for you to safely recycle your old one. Find your nearest electrical recycling point, or read our guide on how to donate or dispose of your appliances and tech for extra guidance.
How we test sandwich toasters
We always eat well during toastie maker testing at the Good Housekeeping Institute! We use each machine to make several toasties, timing how long it takes to heat up and cook the sandwiches. We then take the temperature of every toastie to check for consistency, and make sure the outside of the machine doesn't get too hot during use.
We assess the consistency of each sandwich's colour and note the evenness of toasting. Finally, we test how easy each appliance is to clean, because no one wants to spend hours scrubbing away burnt cheese.
