18 best toasters for consistently golden slices every time, tested by experts
Turning out perfectly golden toast every time

Choosing a toaster seems like a simple enough task, but it's not that easy to find one that delivers golden results every time. The best toaster should be quick, toast your favourite bread evenly on both sides, and be deep enough to accommodate every size and shape of slice.
On top of this, the exterior should stay cool in use and be easy to clean, especially if it shows up fingerprints.
At the Good Housekeeping Institute, we've put over 180 models to the test to find the very best. Whether you’re a small household that only tends to toast a few slices at a time or you’re looking for a top batch performer, fear not, because these winners can do it all.
These are our winners at a glance, but keep reading for our detailed reviews.
The best toasters to buy in 2025
If you’re replacing an existing toaster, there are plenty of places for you to safely recycle your old one. Find your nearest electrical recycling point, or read our guide on how to donate or dispose of your appliances and tech for extra guidance.

How we test toasters
In the Good Housekeeping Institute lab, our experts toast slice after slice of bread to find the best models on the market. We first check whether the slots can accommodate thick farmhouse slices as well as bagels. Then, we assess the consistency of the browning for each slot, and we time it to see how long it takes to get that perfect slice.
Above all, we’re looking for crisp, golden, even results, including when it has to defrost the bread before toasting. The temperature of the exterior casing during use is another important factor – some toasters get as high as 70 degrees, which can make them too hot to handle.
We also look at how easy the toaster is to use and test out any unusual settings. Lastly, how clear and concise the instructions are is also taken into account.
Pros
Excellent, consistent results
7 browning settings
High lift feature for getting toast out easily
Adjustable slots
Cons
The cord isn't that long
Score: 92/100
Looking for a failsafe pick that can achieve the perfect level of toasted-ness every time? This winning two-slice ProCook model provided consistent colour and edge-to-edge coverage, even when batch toasting. With seven browning settings and robust, responsive controls, you can also customise your toast to your taste.
The cord isn’t that long so you’ll need to place it close to a plug socket and it doesn’t have a bagel setting, so ours came out toasted on the back as well, but those are very minor niggles. With a handy high-lift feature for getting your toast out easily, a built-in crumb tray for fuss-free cleaning and adjustable slots for thicker slices, this is a great all-rounder.

Barely dropped a mark in our batch testing
Great for all types of bread
7 browning settings, including 'crispy side' and 'small bread' functions
Memory function so you can save your preferred settings
Cons
Took longer to toast from frozen
Score: 92/100
Just like the ProCook model, this proved itself to be a great all-rounder for toasting everything from thick-slice farmhouse bread to fresh sourdough and bagels, barely dropping a mark in our batch-toasting tests.
It features seven browning settings with dedicated functions including Crispy Side and Small Bread, which means there are 21 different possible combinations to play with for achieving just the right level of toasted-ness. There’s a memory function too so once you’ve found that sweet spot, you’ll never lose it.
It’s on the expensive side and it struggled slightly with toasting frozen bread, taking longer than others we’ve tested. But when you take into account all the features offered, including a lift-and-look function and a hygienic anti-dust lid, it really is a great investment.

Adjustable slot sizes and anti-jamming function
Minimal dirt traps and removable crumb tray help with cleaning
Cons
The toaster walls stay hot for a while after use
Score: 91/100
The matte black finish lends a stylish touch to this functional Salter toaster, making it an excellent kitchen-top addition. It offers adjustable slot sizes for varying thicknesses of bread and its indicator lights are clear and easy to follow. It also has minimal dirt traps and a removable crumb tray, to help with clean-up. Testers liked the anti-jamming function for easy toast extraction, too.
In our toast tests, slices browned evenly with good coverage and our bagels were ready in just two minutes. Note that the toaster walls took a little while to cool down after use.

Toasts in under 3 minutes
Deep, wide slots
Cons
Browning wasn't always consistent
Score: 89/100
If you’re fussy about the shade of your toast and are often left disappointed, rest assured that this two-slice model offers nine browning levels for the best breakfast every time. The handy “lift and look” function lets you sneak a peek at that all-important colour without cancelling the cycle, while the extra lift feature protects your fingers from burns.
Our tester found it toasted a variety of breads quickly, and always in under three minutes, making it a top pick if you’re often running late. It mostly browned consistently, though one of our slices wasn’t the same colour on both sides, and we loved its deep, wide slots for toasting hearty farmhouse loaves. Overall, it’s a smart, simple steal for under £50.

Powerful, delivering precise colour and an even finish
Cons
Slightly slower than other models on test
Score: 89/100
This four-slice toaster offers precise colouring and an even finish, thanks to its seven browning settings. With wide slots and a powerful 1850 watts, it turned hearty farmhouse slices, bagels, crumpets and frozen bread into golden, toasted treats, and the anti-jamming function ensures for smooth operation every time.
It was slightly slower than other models on test, taking just under three minutes 30 seconds for sliced bread and an average of two minutes and 47 seconds for bagels. But all in all, this is versatile and efficient buy.

4 slots and you can select different browning settings
Attractive retro design
Extra lift option so you don't burn your fingers
Cons
No bagel setting
Score: 88/100
If you typically make breakfast for the whole family in the morning, then this toaster will help you cater to all those differing demands. It has slots to toast four slices of bread at once and you can also select two different browning settings – genius! Thanks to the retro design, it also looks the part – we’re fans of the pastel blue colourway for a pop of colour on your countertop.
It doesn’t have a bagel setting, but the wide slots mean it can accommodate a whole bagel with no need to slice it in half, and it didn’t come out of the toaster squashed either. It also has extra lift, so it’s easy to get your toast out without burning those fingers.

Large
Stylish design
Host of features include sandwich setting and keep warm function
Cons
Bulky
Could have been more consistent
Score: 86/100
KitchenAid has a reputation for creating good-looking products, and this four-slice is no exception. It’s big and heavy, so you’ll need spare worktop space, but it boasts every bell and whistle in the book.
Our favourite design features include the sandwich setting (rack included) and clever sensor that automatically lowers your toast after 45 seconds and keeps it warm for three minutes – a saviour for those manic mornings.
There are seven browning levels to suit all tastes and an LED countdown timer for keeping an eye on its progress while attending to other chores. It could have been more consistent when toasting a single slice, especially in the right-hand slots, but it delivered delicious results from thick rustic bread and is a winner for big families.

Pros
Comes in a range of chic colours
Intuitive design
Good for bagels and thick bread
Cons
Only 90% coverage - longer slices had to be flipped over
Score: 86/100
If your kitchen aesthetic matters to you, this sleek four-slice leads the style stakes with its range of five tasteful colours. Happily, it offers plenty of substance, too – it scored full marks for its intuitive design and impressed our tester when toasting thickly sliced bread and bagels.
It only offers five browning settings, but our testers found setting three adequate, leaving more options for those who prefer darker toast. It consistently browned both sides, albeit with 90% coverage at times due to the wide yet shallow slots – the top of longer slices was often left soft and pale, meaning we had to flip them over. If you can let that go for its looks, you’ll love it.

Pros
Compact, so good for smaller kitchens
Good colour and consistent toasting
Affordable
Cons
Shallow slots meant we had to flip the bread
Browning dial not that sturdy
Score: 86/100
Compact, with just two slots for bread and six browning levels, the Laica toaster is a great option for couples, single people or anyone with limited countertop space.
It performed well in our tests, toasting everything from regular slices to thick, chunky farmhouse bread, and providing good colour and consistent browning on both sides. However, it only toasted two-thirds of a slice at a time due to its shallow slots, and the browning dial didn’t feel that sturdy. That said, for the price, this is a trusty buy.

Pros
Extra-long slots and variable widths
Accessible controls
Speedy
Cons
Browning coverage was patchy
Controls weren't the most responsive
Score: 85/100
For anyone who likes to experiment with a variety of different breads, this Breville model boasts extra-long slots and variable widths to accommodate everything from oversized slices of sourdough to crumpets and bagels.
Our testers found the central controls made the toaster easily accessible for both left and right-hand users; however, they weren’t the most responsive. Browning coverage was a little patchier when toasting vertically, too. However, it makes up for any inconsistencies with its speed – it took just over a minute for one slice – and stylish stainless-steel exterior.

Pros
Bell sound when your toast is ready
Cons
Too powerful on higher settings
Score: 84/100
This timeless toaster’s bagel function is designed to toast the inside to perfection while keeping the outside warm and soft. It did this brilliantly, but when toasting single slices of bread, it left one side darker than the other and a slither at the top soft and pale.
It fared better when batch toasting, but its hefty power meant our testers achieved a golden brown shade on setting two but noted some burning on three, leaving limited options for those who like paler toast.
On the plus side, there’s no danger of popping your bread down and forgetting to collect the toast, as a bell goes off once it’s ready. Breakfast's served!

Stylish design
4 slots that can be set to different temperatures
Turns out perfectly toasted bagels
Cons
The metal top gets quite hot
Expensive
Score: 83/100
This modern, minimalist four-slice comes in a range of eight colours to suit all kitchen colour palettes. It toasted quickly (two and a half minutes max) and performed well, especially when batch toasting. Our tester also loved that each pair of slots could be set to different temperatures, meeting everyone’s demands.
The effective bagel setting is sure to prove popular, too – on test, it evenly browned the sliced sides and left the backs pillowy soft. Our only qualm is that, while the outer casing remains cool, the metal top gets hot, and there’s no extra lift function to keep your fingers safe.

Pros
Feels premium despite affordable price tag
Speedy
Great for batch toasting
Cons
Single slice toasting was inconsistent
Score: 83/100
This affordable two-slice looks more expensive than it is with its trendy metallic controls. It was speedy in action, taking under two and a half minutes to toast most of our slices, and it wowed our tester with its near-perfect performance when batch toasting.
Toast popped up evenly browned every time, with 100% coverage on each slice, thanks to an electronic temperature sensor, which ensures colour consistency. It proved similarly reliable when toasting bagels and thickly sliced farmhouse bread.
Our only complaint was that when toasting single slices, the inwards-facing sides came out much darker than the outer sides, but that’s an ideal excuse to indulge in two slices.

Cons
Coverage was a little patchy
Score: 83/100
With its pared back looks and budget-friendly price, this is a great value buy. It felt well-made and durable on test and with six levels of browning, it should suit everyone’s toasting taste.
Our toast was a little on the patchy side when it came to coverage, and it doesn’t have a bagel setting (so both sides will be toasted). It’s quick though, making it ideal for busy mornings.

Pros
Soft-lift function stops your toast popping out
Excellent for single slice toasting
Defrosted bread evenly
Cons
Inconsistent browning on our batch tests
Not great for bagels
Score: 82/100
This sleek two-slice toaster is easy to use and comes with slick features like a soft-lift function that stops the toast from jumping out. Browning wasn’t as consistent as we’d have liked, we had to use a high setting to achieve our desired shade, and it wasn’t the best bagel toaster either.
However, it outperformed most others we tested when faced with a single slice, gently toasting our bread to the optimum shade. It also defrosted bread evenly. A good buy for fans of the single slice.

Pros
Toast is easy to remove from the slots
Colourful design
Cons
No bagel function or keep warm setting
Build feels a little plasticky
Score: 81/100
Most kitchen appliances come in blacks, greys or neutral colours, but this toaster switches things up with raspberry pink, pale green and trendy butter yellow.
The controls are straightforward to use, with a dial for the browning settings and buttons to defrost and pop up your toast. In testing, three minutes provided the perfect level of toastiness for normal slices, while frozen bread took closer to four minutes and had uneven browning across both sides. There were quite a few dirt traps too, with the crumb tray failing to keep our surfaces neat and tidy.
That said, the simple, user-friendly design makes this a great value buy.

Cons
Shallow slots mean you may have to flip your bread over
Score: 81/100
Here’s one for those who prefer thicker slices of toast, as the wide slots on this toaster cater to all bread types. Our expert was impressed with its effective seven browning levels too, easily achieving their desired shade without reaching the top setting. It was also consistent, even when batch toasting.
It handled frozen bread well and toasted bagels nicely, even though it doesn’t have a dedicated setting. It’s shallow though, so you may need to flip your slice to fully toast it.

Pros

Two crumb trays for easy cleaning
Simple instructions and clearly labelled icons on the toaster
Cons
The gap around the top easily collects crumbs
Score: 80/100
For reliability, it was difficult to fault this toaster. Slice after slice emerged with consistent browning and coverage; out of 20 slices of bread, only one differed. Testers saw similar results with thick-cut bread too – good news if you love a farmhouse loaf. And there’s even a handy lift-and-look function if you want to check on its progress mid-toasting.
There’s no bagel setting though, making it hard to get the right level of crunchy and golden for those. But the wide slots meant they didn’t get squashed and removing them was simple. Just note that the primary slots are on the right side, so you can’t use the left slots on their own. But this quirk aside, our experts found the toaster enjoyable and intuitive to use.

How to choose the best toaster
Going back to basics, you'll need to choose between a two- or four-slot toaster. Both types of toaster can also be designed as a long slot, where the bread sits side by side in the slot(s).
The type of toaster you buy can make a difference to your morning routine. If you’re feeding a family, then a four-slice may be the one for you, but if you’re short on counter space, a two-slot may be the better option. If you're on a budget, we've found plenty of great toasters for under £55 – see our best cheap toasters article to browse our top scorers.

Features to consider
Shade settings - Shade settings can sometimes represent the number of minutes the toaster will run for before popping, but that’s not always the case. They indicate a scale of how toasted your bread will be. This means the higher the scale, the more options you will get and the more accurate you can be with setting your toast shade.
Variable width slots - This means your toaster will better fit thick and thin slices. When you press down the lever, a metal frame will compress and fit to your slices as it lowers to make sure they’re toasted evenly, regardless of thickness. This is useful when toasting bagels, for example.
High lift - As the name suggests, this allows you to push the products higher than they naturally sit after popping. This means you can pick them up without burning fingers.
Crumb tray - Most toasters now come with a removable crumb tray, which is usually concealed around the base. When you clean your toaster, always start by removing and emptying the crumb tray as this catches all of the crumbs that fall as you toast.
Other things to look out for when buying a toaster
Accessories - Some toasters come with metal racks that sit on top and allow you to warm items like rolls or croissants. Others offer a sandwich rack that clamps and toasts your sandwich within. Toasters that offer accessories such as these will also come with a specific setting for each.
A bit more/A little longer - Brands give this feature different names, but if you find a function with a name such as “a bit more” or “a little longer” it will allow you to toast your bread for slightly longer if it’s not quite to your taste after popping.
Keep warm - This will lower your toast back into the toaster and keep it warm until you’re ready for it – some models do this automatically.
Check/quick look - This lets you take a look at the progress of your toast, should you worry it’s already there. It will usually pause the toasting as you raise the lever, and then continue once you lower it again.
Digital display - Some toasters have a digital display so you can see how long is left with its countdown timer.
How to clean a toaster
If you get a burning smell every time you toast, chances are, you have a lot of crumbs in there and it's time for a clean. First of all, wait until it's completely cool to the touch. Then, lay down a tea towel to handle all the crumbs – it's going to get messy!
Our experts recommend using a pastry brush to get rid of any crumbs on top before carefully removing, emptying and soaking the crumb tray. You'll also need to turn your toaster upside down over the bin to remove any remaining crumbs.

The verdict: What is the Good Housekeeping Institute's best toaster?
If you don't eat loads of toast and have a smaller kitchen, opt for one of our joint winning 2-slice models, the ProCook toaster or the Haier I-Master Series 5. Larger households/toast lovers can't go wrong with the Salter 4-Slice toaster, which offers lots of features and versatility for 49.99.
