Chances are, you'll first notice the signs of ageing around your eyes, be that crow's feet, or as we like to call them “smile lines” (those fine lines at the outer corners of the eyes), or dark, puffy circles that just won't budge. This is because the skin in this area is more delicate than elsewhere on the face and body.

While lines and wrinkles are a natural part of getting older, if you're looking to firm and brighten the area around your eyes, introducing one of our experts' best anti-ageing eye creams into your skincare routine could make a big difference.

Here are their top picks at a glance, but read on for the fuller reviews.

Best anti-ageing eye creams for 2025

Is there an eye cream that actually works?

It's a commonly asked question, and happily, the answer is yes! Our trusted panel of 1,000 beauty testers tried a range of hydrating, anti-wrinkle eye creams for a month, and the products listed below all made a noticeable difference.

How we test

Over 1,000 beauty testers tried 79 anti-ageing eye creams designed to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, as well as tackle puffiness and dark circles. Over a month-long trial, they assessed the effect each cream had on fine lines, deep wrinkles, moisture levels and firmness.

Back in the Good Housekeeping Institute beauty lab, our experts measured exactly how much of an impact each eye cream had on our panel's fine lines and wrinkles with the help of a VISIA Complexion Analyser, which is able to measure the health of the skin, looking at fine lines, wrinkles, texture, pores, pigmentation and more.

Here are the top-scoring eye creams.

How is eye cream different from face cream?

line break

Fine lines and wrinkles develop more easily on the fragile skin around your eyes, meaning this thinner, more delicate skin needs some extra TLC that face creams aren’t designed to provide. Eye creams are formulated to be less irritating and more soothing than your average face cream, making them a key part of any skincare regime.

Elizabeth D Hawkes FRCOphth, Consultant Ophthalmologist and Oculoplastic Surgeon, explains: “Your eyelid skin loses its elasticity and stretches as you age. Eye creams typically differ from regular facial moisturisers in a few key ways, but importantly, active ingredients such as retinol usually appear in lower concentrations in order to avoid irritating the delicate eye skin.”

Which is better: eye cream or eye gel?

line break

Both cream and gel textures will boost hydration for thirsty under-eyes, but in different ways. Cream is thicker, meaning it will quench even the most dehydrated skin, but gel will have an instantly cooling effect on puffy eyes.

If you’re prone to milia (those tiny bumps) around the eye area, opt for the lighter texture of a gel to reduce the risk of them developing.

How to apply eye cream

line break

It's important to be as gentle as possible, meaning no dragging or rubbing. Hawkes advises cleansing the face thoroughly before applying “a small amount of eye cream onto your ring finger and gently patting it around your eyes.”

“Eye cream should go near your eyes, but not onto your top eyelid,” she says. “Nor should it be used directly below your bottom lashes. It should be applied along the orbital bone, or eye socket, and not on the lids. Work from the inner corners of the eyes outwards with gentle patting motions.”
