Using thousands of profile pictures from Twitter, a team of researchers found that they could accurately predict personality traits based on things like picture quality and facial presentation.
The study, printed in Analyzing Personality through Social Media Profile Picture Choice, found the following:
- Higher quality pictures, such as those with a higher saturation of colour or less blur, were associated with open personalities.
- Photos that didn’t show faces were associated with either openness or neuroticism.
- Simple, uncolourful images were also linked to neuroticism.
- Colourful, natural and bright images were an indicator of a conscientious personality.
- The most colourful images and those that contain multiple people tend to belong to extroverts.
- Bright photos indicate agreeableness.
So, are you dashing off to change your profile picture pronto, or do you think it’s a pretty good fit?!
