The creators of The Missing are back with a brand-new show starring Downton Abbey’s Joanne Froggatt.

Liar is a six-part ITV series in which secondary school teacher Laura Nielson (Froggatt) and surgeon Andrew Earlham (Ioan Gruffudd) become embroiled in conflict after a date.

Laura is a smart and dedicated teacher, not long out of a relationship and unsure about getting back on the dating scene. Andrew is a charming and renowned surgeon whose son is a pupil at Laura’s school.

The show’s creators are being tight-tipped about the exact plot, but judging from the trailer (below), the shows centres on the issue of sexual consent.

Radio Times has also described the plot as being about a ‘possible date rape case.’

Speaking about the show, writers and executive producers Harry and Jack Williams said:

‘After writing two series of The Missing, which was told across multiple timelines with a number of different points of view, we were excited about exploring something with more dramatic simplicity - a linear story focusing on one single incident.

Speaking about the thriller, lead actor Joanne Froggatt said:

‘When I read the script, it brought up a lot of questions about all sorts of subject matters and how we, as a society, think about certain things.’

Commenting on her character, she added:

‘Quite often Laura makes decisions that I wished she wouldn’t. She makes some wrong turns certainly, and as an actress, I had to do a lot of research to find reasoning for the way she behaves, and the way she reacts.

‘But as with all the characters in this show, she’s flawed, she’s human, as we all are, and that’s what interested me about her really.’
