Today marks 70 years since 'Victory in Europe', which celebrated the end of the Second World War in this continent, six years after its outbreak.

There were celebrations all round back then, and it's still remembered seven decades on. Which is why we're sharing a VE Day-related social media campaign with you that we really think is worth getting involved in.

The Royal British Legion is asking the great British public to help raise awareness of the meaningful anniversary by sharing a kiss with someone they love, before posting it on social media alongside the hashtag #KissForVEDay.

What to read next

The kiss can be on the hand, cheek, lips, or even in the air if you so wish, but the Royal British Legion are keen for as many people as possible to get involved in the uplifting campaign, which allows the memory of all those who fought for their country to live on.

And the kiss holds a huge significance to the day itself. When the Allies accepted Nazi Germany's surrender, Prime Minister at the time, Sir Winston Churchill, announced an immediate public holiday, and spontaneous crowds gathered in the British capital where celebrations ensued.

‘I always say that I was kissed more that night (VE Day) than I had ever been kissed in my life before,’ recalled writer Marguerite Patten.

A quick browse of the hashtag indicates that the campaign has already taken hold. Good Morning Britain's Susannah Reid, Lorraine Kelly, and This Morning's Ruth and Eamon all helped the charity to launch their campaign, and we're right behind them.

So what are you waiting for? Grab a loved one, plant a kiss on their cheek, and share away. It's for a brilliant cause.
