As fans prepare for next week's season finale of Doctor Foster, has creator Mike Bartlett just hinted that one character's fate could end in bloody murder?
Bartlett has revealed that the compelling BBC One drama was originally based on Euripides' Greek tragedy Medea, which features a scorned wife seeking violent retribution for her husband's infidelity.
'In the original pitch, I never actually said, "We're going to do Medea at 9pm on BBC One" because it probably wouldn't have gone down very well,' the 36-year-old playwright told the Radio Times.
'But that idea was always behind it. I wanted to take some of those misogynist ideas about mad women and witches, and hopefully subvert them.'
In Greek mythology, Medea avenges her husband's cheating by killing their children – but could Gemma (Suranne Jones) really end up murdering her own son Tom (Tom Taylor) just to spite conniving ex-husband Simon?
There are various conclusions to the myth, and another sees Medea and her son team up together to kill her unfaithful husband and his new young wife.

So, could Gemma and 15-year-old Tom collaborate to kill Simon (Bertie Carvel) and his new younger wife Kate (Jodie Comer)?
Bartlett also suggested that the ending of series two could mean a third series isn't realistic, adding: 'Depending on what happens at the end of series two, a third might not be possible.
'That's all I can say really.'
Could Tom turn killer and lash out at his dysfunctional parents? Will Gemma end up dying as a result of Simon's uncontrolled rage? Or could Gemma and Simon end up back together despite despising one another?
Doctor Foster's season 2 finale airs next week (October 4) on BBC One at 9pm.
