Poldark series four has already come to its heartbreaking conclusion and we know the next instalment of the Cornish period drama will be the last, but fans of the show will be happy to hear its writer Debbie Horsfield has an exciting new project on the horizon.

Horsfield, who pens the period drama for BBC one and has another series, Age Before Beauty, airing this summer has announced she’s writing an adaptation of the classic novel The Count of Monte Cristo.

According to RadioTimes.com, Horsfield is working on a TV version of Alexander Dumas’ 1884 book about a Count who is wrongfully imprisoned and escapes from jail.

The series will be produced by Mammoth Screen, the production company behind Poldark and ITV’s Victoria.

“There are several new projects I’m working on, but following our five-year collaboration on Poldark, I’m thrilled to be continuing my relationship with [executive producers] Damien Timmer and Karen Thrussell at Mammoth Screen by developing The Count of Monte Cristo with them,” Horsfield said.

“Dumas’ classic is one of the greatest adventure stories of all time and we’re excited to be bringing his compelling characters and edge of the seat storytelling to the screen,” she added.

We’re excited to see the adaptation hit screens, and in the meantime, we’ll be looking forward to Poldark season five, which is expected to return to BBC One next year.
