ITV has released details of upcoming drama Innocent, a new four-part series starring Hermione Norris and Lee Ingleby.

Lee stars as David Collins, a man released from prison after seven years on a technicality, after being convicted of murdering his wife Tara.

Throughout his time in prison, David protested his innocence but found he lost the support of almost everyone around him, including his sister-in-law Alice (Hermione Norris) who took over care of his children.

Alice and her husband Rob were unable to have children themselves and after finally getting the family they always wanted, they’re terrified of losing the kids – Jack and Rose – to David now he’s out of prison.

“Alice had always wanted children. She has been through rounds of IVF and tried really hard to have a family. So if she loses them she loses everything. The stakes are very high for her,” Hermione explained.

Speaking about his character, Lee said: “David is angry and upset that people who were close to him have been against him and weren’t prepared to listen to his point of view. So when he comes out of prison he wants to confront those people.”

The show explores Alice and Lee’s battle for Jack and Rose, and ultimately explores what really happened to Tara.

Just as recent ITV drama Liar divided viewers, Chris Lang, Innocent’s co-writer and creator has said he hopes the dramatic show will ‘provoke’ audiences.

“We hope it will move you, we hope it will surprise you, we hope it will provoke you (in a good way!) and who knows, if it does, and the audience agree, there could be an ‘Innocent II’”.

Innocent airs Monday 14th May – Thursday 17th May at 9pm on ITV.
