Much to our sadness and disappointment, we know the upcoming season two of The Crown will be the last hoorah for Claire Foy and Matt Smith as Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip.

The pair will be back for their final stint as the royal couple in December, but from series three onwards they will be replaced by new actors, as passage of time dictates character’s ages will need to change dramatically.

Claire, who has won a Golden Globe award for her portrayal of Queen Elizabeth II has been speaking to Town and Country about her upcoming exit, saying she’s ‘in denial.’

Claire also spoke about how she would ‘hate’ the idea of the Queen watching her on screen.

‘When you’re playing a real person, you never want to be ghoulish,’ she told Town and Country.

‘I don’t want to pick apart a person. I want to invent someone. So I would hate for her to watch it and think I overdramatized anything.’

Sad as we are that Claire won’t be entertaining us with her brilliant depiction of HRH forever and ever, we’re excited to see her in season 2 of The Crown when it airs on Netflix on December 8th.
