The Handmaid's Tale has FINALLY arrived in the UK and wow – it is amazing, but there is definitely a seriously disturbing streak that runs right through it.
Based on Margaret Atwood's 1985 novel of the same name, it centres on a totalitarian society in which women such as Offred (Elizabeth Moss) are treated as property of the state and are forced into sexual servitude.
One of the more horrible scenes was 'The Ceremony' where the Handmaid (Offred) was forced to have sex with the master of the house in hope she can get pregnant.
Viewers were naturally disturbed by the upsetting scenes.
A Margaret Atwood cameo went down well with fans of the novel:
Talking of the novel, many were very impressed with the adaptation and praised the way it was portrayed.
However, there were a couple of hiccups along the way. Viewers were really, really annoyed about the sound quality.
Whether it was because Offred's internal monologue was quieter due to the character or the audio was just bad, either way it was quite distracting.
Also, the fact that there were lots of commercial breaks was a dealbreaker for some people as it broke the stride of the drama.
The Handmaid's Tale airs on Channel 4.
