For anyone who sat enraptured in front of the 2001 film Moulin Rouge – and got through a whole box of tissues at the movie's emotional finale – we have some good news.

The Baz Luhrmann spectacular is finally getting a stage adaptation, and, given the popularity of the original film starring Nicole Kidman and Ewan McGregor, it's bound to be a big hit.

What to read next

Moulin Rouge tells the tragic love story of a young, penniless poet and a beautiful courtesan. And the film had a much-lauded soundtrack, with hits including David Bowie’s Heroes and Elton John’s Your Song.

Director Alex Timbers, responsible for Broadway’s Rocky, and Tony winner John Logan are on board with the project and have the full backing of Baz.

In a statement, Baz said: ‘I first encountered Alex Timbers through the remarkable and inventive production of Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson and the brilliance of Here Lies Love. I immediately recognised the young director’s creative spirit and felt we shared similar sensibilities and instincts.

‘So I’m tremendously happy to celebrate that Moulin Rouge! will be under his direction and that the book will be the creation of the gifted Tony Award-winning playwright John Logan whose writing I also admire deeply.

‘It’s immensely gratifying to know that a new wave of artists will be leading Moulin Rouge! into its rightful theatrical realm.’

There's no fixed date for when the musical will start yet, but we'll definitely be snapping up tickets when it does...
