It’s the dating question that always sparks controversy – who should pick up the bill after a first date?

While traditionally, it was men who were expected to pay, now it’s common for couples to split the bill – but a new survey has revealed that men and women have very different attitudes towards this.

The research by Paym showed that women are twice as likely as men to want to split the bill on a first date, with 66% of women saying they'd like to, compared to 29% of men.

Indeed, the vast majority of males (69%) thought they should pay in full for the first date, citing the main reasons as tradition and the guilt they would feel for not treating their date.

Meanwhile just 3% of women said they expected to pick up the full tab for a first date, while 22% of females wanted to have every single penny paid by their suitor.
