Matthew and Mary Crawley were potentially our favourite couple in Downton Abbey, so we were shocked to hear they weren't intended to play out their love story.

Apparently the writers didn’t originally plan for the two lovebirds to end up together, and Matthew was in fact supposed to hook up with Lady Sybil.

Yep, Allen Leech (aka Tom Branson) revealed Julian Fellowes’ original plans at Deadline’s Emmys event, and our heads were spinning at the thought of Matthew and Mary never falling in love.

‘Matthew Crawley was supposed to end up with Sybil,’ he revealed – while also telling the audience that his character was originally supposed to be in the show for three episodes.

But can you imagine what it would have been like if Matthew ended up marrying a different sister, and Tom not playing such a pivotal role?

Some fans were also convinced Tom and Mary would end up marrying after both losing their partners, but Allen said that it was ‘always just a friendship’ between those two characters.
