Unfortunately, in modern society where terrorism and extremism are plaguing the news, it can be hard to know what countries are safe to travel to.

It can be scary and put us off traveling all together but, as long as we are careful, we don’t need confine ourselves to our little island – after all, our beautiful planet also has lots of glorious adventures to offer.

To help navigate safe territory around the world, the Foreign Office has released a list of the 18 countries that are unsafe for British nationals to travel to. The countries are listed in alphabetical order, not ranked from most to least dangerous.

Unsurprisingly, Egypt is on the list following a Russian plane crashing after taking off from Sharm el-Sheikh last week. Thousands of British holidaymakers are still awaiting transport back to the UK after return flights were cancelled. The Foreign Office advises ‘all but essential travel by air to or from Sharm el-Sheikh’. It has been reported that commercial flights to the resort will not resume until 26 November at the earliest.
