Prince Philip has passed away, aged 99, the royal family has confirmed. The Duke of Edinburgh died on Friday morning (9 April), peacefully at Windsor Castle.
An official statement from the Queen was released on the Royal Family's official Twitter account.
It reads: "It is with deep sorrow that Her Majesty The Queen has announced the death of her beloved husband, His Royal Highness The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh.
"His Royal Highness passed away peacefully this morning at Windsor Castle."
Further announcements are expected in due course.
The Duke of Edinburgh was born Prince Philip of Greece on 10 June, 1921 on the island of Corfu, as a member of both the Greek and Danish royal families. He and Her Majesty the Queen, then Princess Elizabeth, married on 20 November, 1947, and share four children, Prince Charles, Princess Anne, Prince Andrew and Prince Edward.
As Queen’s Consort, it is expected that Prince Philip may receive a state funeral, with further details to be announced in due course.
