The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge opened up about how they're coping with the challenge of lockdown in a live video interview with BBC News on Friday morning (17 April) during which they paid tribute to NHS workers.

"It's been ups and downs, like a lot of families self-isolating," the Duchess admitted when asked about how the Cambridges are doing. "George is much older than Louis is, but they are aware.

"Although you don't want to scare them, and make it too overwhelming, I think it is appropriate to acknowledge it in the simple ways, in an age-appropriate way."

The couple were then asked how home schooling is going for Prince George, six, Princess Charlotte, four, and Prince Louis, who turns two on 23 April.

"Yeah, home schooling's fun," said Prince William with a wry laugh, while turning to look at Kate.

The Duchess then admitted they have told a tiny white lie to their kids, regarding the Easter break.

"But don't tell the children – we've actually kept it going through the holidays," Kate said.

"I feel very mean," she said with a smile. "But the children have got such stamina, I don't know how, honestly.

"You get to the end of the day, you write down all the list of the things you have done in that day."

Kate also gave an insight into some of the extracurricular activities the family has been enjoying during lockdown.

"You sort of pitch a tent, take the tent down again, cook, bake, you get to enjoy the end of the day," she said. "They've had a lovely time. But it is amazing how much you can cram into a day, that's for sure."

The royal couple also sent a special message to Captain Tom Moore, the 99-year-old WWII veteran who has raised millions for the NHS thanks to his #WalkWithTom charity challenge, which has seen him undertake 100 lengths of his garden before his 100th birthday at the end of the month.

"It's incredible," said Prince William of Captain Moore's achievement. "It's amazing. And what I love also is that he's a 99-year-old war vet. He's been around a long time. He knows everything and it's wonderful that everyone has been inspired by his story and his determination.

"He's a one-man fundraising machine."
