A tearful Andy Murray has revealed he plans to retire from tennis later this year with the hope he can finish his career playing at Wimbledon.

The 31-year-old announced the sad news at a press conference in Melbourne on Friday (January 11th) but said he fears next week's Australian Open could be the last time he plays.

"I said to my team 'Look, I think I can get through this until Wimbledon. That's where I'd Like to stop play'. But, I'm also not certain I'm able to do that," Andy said.

Following surgery on his hip last January, the former world number one admitted he is still struggling to recover.

He added: "I've been in a lot of pain for probably about 20 months now. I've pretty much done everything that I could to try and get my hip feeling better and it hasn't helped loads."

The dad-of-two has received messages of support from fellow tennis players, celebrities and fans on social media - all wishing him well as he prepares to play against Roberto Bautista Agut on Monday.

Andy first won Wimbledon in 2013 and is the first British man to win more than one Wimbledon title since 1936.
