Note: This article contains major spoilers for The Cry episode 4
The Cry finally revealed all about the fate of baby Noah, Joanna (Jenna Coleman) and her manipulating husband Alistair (Ewen Leslie), and it was as deliciously vengeful as we'd hoped.
After months of deception, slimy Alastair revealed that he had given Noah the fatal medicine dose at Melbourne airport but had let Jo believe it was all her fault. And, as if that weren't wicked enough, he had also lied about the location of Noah's burial, taking Jo to a beach knowing that they were being watched by the police, who would later dig up the area in the hope of finding the body.
Instead, he'd actually dumped the body at a housing building site, and even later photographed Jo in the kitchen of the show home, knowing she was standing over the exact spot where he'd buried their baby.
And Jo killed him, by undoing his seatbelt as she drove off a winding Highland road into a ditch.
Of course, we may now know who did what to whom, but have the writers left enough room for questions and doubt –and a possible second season? Here are the puzzles still to be resolved.
1. Is Jo's story the absolute truth?
The action of the final episode centres around Jo's discovery of Alistair's deceptions, but let's not forget she's telling a few convincing lies of her own by still perpetuating the myth that Noah was snatched from them.
Only Jo and Alistair know what really happened – Jo admits in court that Al was "the only person who truly knew the truth of my pain" – so could what we have seen just be Jo's interpretation of the facts? While it seems pretty clear what caused Noah's and Alistair's actual deaths, could Jo have left out parts of her story that would have made her less sympathetic? Is there more to it all than we think we know?
2. Will Chloe turn detective?
Alistair's teenage daughter Chloe stands holding a photo of baby Noah when Jo arrives at court, and she seems to be the one person who wants more answers. We're convinced Chloe's 1st birthday 'party' for Noah, while in bad taste, was actually a ruse so she could see how her father and Jo would react.
Chloe has already questioned why Jo and Alistair didn't follow any news of the Australian search for their baby after they returned home to Scotland – could a second season focus on Chloe uncovering the whole truth about the baby half-brother she never got to meet?
3. Has Alistair's mum figured it out?
Before snake Alistair slithered back to Scotland, he had a very loaded conversation with his mother Elizabeth, and by the look on her face it is likely she figured out that her son was to blame for the disappearance of her grandson.
She has remained close to her daughter-in-law Jo, however, visiting her in hospital after the car 'accident' and supporting her in court, so presumably Lorna doesn't blame her for anything. But with Jo now living close by in Australia, how long will it be until Lorna discovers that she was involved in Alistair's deception from the start? And how supportive will she be then?
4. Why did Alex keep a spade in her car?
It could be a red herring, but there's still the question of why Alistair's ex-wife Alex bought a spade and then kept it in her car. She could be a keen gardener of course, ready to whip out her tools whenever a flowerbed needs tending, or maybe she had it at the ready just in case she wanted to club Al over the head with it.
Or, unlikely as it may be, was it her spade that Alistair used to bury Noah – and if so, does she know? Could a second season have the police discovering the spade and suspecting Alex? We wouldn't put it past Alistair to have framed his ex-wife from beyond the grave…
