Gordon Ramsay is known for his tough demeanour in the kitchen but the top chef has given us a glimpse of his softer side, opening up about the emotions of sending kids off to university.

Appearing on The Jonathan Ross Show, airing tonight (5 October), Ramsay revealed that he was “a mess” after leaving his 18-year-old twins Jack and Holly at their respective universities last week.

“Tilly [Ramsay’s 16-year-old daughter], Tana [his wife] and myself took Jack down to the college last week. Man that was hard,” Ramsay recounted.

“We put him in his little room, left him some fettuccine and pasta for him to cook, student food. Left him there and I got in the car and I was a mess. My best mate has just left me. And then the next day we put Holly into University. I was like, ‘Man this is tough!’”

Back in September, Ramsay posted a heartfelt message about his son’s impending university move on Instagram.

“You can’t beat a great chat about life on the beach before dinner with your best mate! I’m going to miss this one when he goes next week to University #bestmates #dadgoals,” he wrote.

How will Gordon fare when his youngest, Tilly, leaves home?

“I’ll cry,” Ramsay told Jonathan Ross.

See, he’s a teddy bear, really!

The Jonathan Ross show airs Saturday 6 October at 9.50pm on ITV.
