When it comes to romantic holiday destinations in the UK, there's a wealth of places, from the Highlands to the Cotswolds, that are ideal for lovers – but a new survey has named the Lake District as the number one spot for couples.
Released in time for Valentine's Day, the poll of 2,000 Brits by Premier Inn found that Windermere, in particular, is the romantic holiday location of choice among the majority of couples.
With its 10.5-mile lake, picturesque surrounding fells, the towns of Bowness and Windermere to explore, plus our exclusive trip to the nearby gardens with Gardeners' World's Pippa Greenwood this year, there's never been a better time to plan a romantic escape to the lakes.
It wasn't the only natural beauty spot to be favoured by Britons in love. Loch Lomond, the location of Good Housekeeping's Scottish rail and lochs break, is another must-see if you're travelling as two, while Dorset's Durdle Door and the Peak District also made the list of the UK's most romantic spots.
Traditionally beautiful settings for couples such as the Cotswold village of Bourton-on-the-water, Shakespeare's Stratford-upon-Avon and the Royal Crescent in Bath also featured in the top 40.
While 64 per cent of Brits said they opt for the countryside when thinking of romantic places, London sights including St Paul’s Cathedral, Little Venice and Greenwich Park also made the cut.
The research found that half of the nation believes Britain's romantic locations are underrated compared to those abroad.
Viewpoints to watch the sunset (61%), quiet and secluded areas (58%) and greenery (44%) were the most important features of a romantic destination, while more than half of those polled said visiting a romantic place with a partner keeps the relationship strong.
The poll revealed that the average couple goes on two sentimental weekends away together each year, costing around £187 each trip.
