Prince Louis: The cheekiest royal’s most adorable moments as he turns 7
Happy birthday, Prince Louis!
Celebratory birthday wishes are in order for one of the youngest royals, as Prince Louis celebrates his seventh birthday on 23 April. Prince Louis is the youngest child and second son of the Prince and Princess of Wales, following brother Prince George and sister Princess Charlotte.
From a very young age, Prince Louis won hearts around the world for his expressive face and cheeky moments during public events – especially during Queen Elizabeth II’s Jubilee celebrations when he was just four years old, receiving widespread coverage for his memorable encounters with family members, pulling faces and even putting his hand over mum Kate’s mouth. It was a hugely relatable moment for many parents, and secured Prince Louis’ place as the cheekiest royal.
This year, as Prince Louis turns seven years old, he will be celebrating with his family, and tucking into homemade cake. Chatting to Dame Mary Berry for her BBC show A Berry Royal Christmas in 2019, The Princess revealed a special ritual when it comes to her children’s birthdays. ‘I love making the cake,’ Kate said. ‘It’s become a bit of a tradition that I stay up until midnight with ridiculous amounts of cake mix and icing and I make far too much. But I love it.’ To mark Prince Louis’ special day, we’re taking a look at some of his most adorable moments, from driving a digger with his dad to pulling faces on the Buckingham Palace balcony.
A new royal baby
The Prince and Princess of Wales welcomed their third child on 23 April 2018. Kate met press outside the Lindo Wing of St Mary’s hospital to introduce her newborn son, Prince Louis, to the world. He was born at 11am, weighing a healthy 8lbs 7oz.
Christening Day
Prince Louis was less than three months old when he was christened at St James’ Palace, London, on 9 July 2018. Here, Kate carries a sleeping baby Louis in his christening gown, which was also worn by his dad Prince William, grandfather The King, and great grandmother Queen Elizbabeth II. It’s a replica of the gown made by Queen Victoria for her eldest daughter in 1841.
Not amused
At the Trooping of the Colour in 2019, to mark the late Queen Elizabeth II’s birthday, Prince Louis was brought out on to the balcony at Buckingham Palace, but didn’t appear to be enjoying the occasion!
A noisy flypast
Standing on the balcony alongside Queen Elizabeth II at the Trooping of the Colour in 2022 , Prince Louis put his hands over his ears to block out the noise of the flypast overhead.
The Platinum Pageant
One of Prince Louis' most memorable moments has to be at the Platinum Pageant in celebration of Queen Elizabeth’s landmark Platinum Jubilee. Parents of young children across the world related to the tricky predicament, as Prince Louis struggled to keep still during the long event. Many cheeky moments were caught on camera – including putting his hand over his mum’s mouth.
Posing for the paparazzi
While watching the pageant, Prince Louis wagged his fingers and looked over towards the paparazzi. The wider royal family also attended the event, including the then Prince Charles and Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, Zara and Mike Tindall and Prince Louis’ siblings.
The King's knee
At the pageant, Prince Louis was passed between various family members who attempted to keep him calm and entertained. Here, his grandfather The King (then Prince Charles) sits him on his knee for a chat.
Cuddles with mum
While Prince Louis hit the headlines for his cheeky behaviour, he was also snapped giggling and enjoying a cuddle with his mum, Kate during the Jubilee Pageant.
The King's Coronation
Prince Louis was five years old when he attended the official Coronation of The King in 2023. Here, he sits with his big sister Prince Charlotte in Westminster Abbey.
A day with the Scouts
Days after the Coronation, Prince Louis joins the Scouts in Slough and gets stuck in during an activity day, concentrating as he fires a rubber arrow.
Diggers with Dad
During his visit with the Scouts in 2023, Prince Louis got the chance to ride on his dad’s knee while Prince William took control of a digger. The visit was part of the Big Help Out which encourages people to volunteer in their communities.
Having fun
During a more recent flypast at Buckingham Palace for The King’s Trooping of the Colour parade, Prince Louis appeared to embrace the noise. Standing on the balcony in front of a smiling Princess of Wales, he acted out a motorbike ride to the sound of the planes overhead.
