Keeley Hawes's new ITV drama Finding Alice began on Sunday night (17 January), receiving a mixed response from viewers so far, who nonetheless were loving Keeley's performance.
The black comedy follows Keeley's Alice as she comes to terms with the sudden death of her husband Harry after he seemingly falls down the stairs of their dream smart house that he had just built for his family.
But it's not long until Harry's murky secret past is uncovered, filled with debt and criminality, which Alice is beginning to discover as she grapples grief and the property's impractical functions.
Some viewers praised the show for its honest depiction of death and grief, with one fan commenting: "It's full on in-your-face death and grief, all the things you don’t think about until it happens to you, but it’s funny & warm somehow. I love it!"
Another added: "#FindingAlice is such a gem! So sad and emotional but layered with sarcasm and humour which makes it less heavy but still profound."
"The characters aren't necessarily pleasant but they are very human & the cast, lead by the magnificent @Misskeeleyhawes, is amazing," one viewer tweeted.
Some were a bit miffed at where the plot was going to go, but most were loving Keeley as Alice, and Joanna Lumley and Nigel Havers as her parents.
The drama, created by Keeley. Roger Goldby, and Simon Nye, and written by Roger and Simon, also stars Safe House's Jason Merrells as Alice's ill-fated husband Harry.
Gentleman Jack star Gemma Jones and Bancroft's Kenneth Cranham as Minnie and Gerry, Alice's in-laws. Rounding out the core cast is Paranoid's Isabella Pappas as Alice and Harry's 16-year-old daughter Charlotte, and The Capture's Sharon Rooney as Harry's sister Nicola.
Finding Alice continues next Sunday, 24 January 24, on ITV at 9pm.
