I’m very keen on history, and one of the best books I’ve ever read is Mary Tudor: England’s First Queen by Anna Whitelock. The daughter of Henry VIII and Catherine of Aragon, Mary had a royal upbringing until her parents divorced and she lost everything.

All four of my children – who are real 21st-century kids – were enchanted by The Children Of Cherry Tree Farm by Enid Blyton. It’s about a group of children who come to the countryside to recover from measles. They meet a tramp who lives in the woods that teaches them about nature, and they have lots of adventures.
