Fundamentally by Nussaibah Younis
This novel about Nadia, who accepts a UN job in Iraq rehabilitating ISIS brides, is one of the funniest I’ve read for ages. Alongside the hilarious observations, it’s a thought-provoking, sensitive book about race, religion and womanhood.
The relationship between Nadia and Sara, a sweary East Londoner who joined ISIS at 15, is particularly good; I loved seeing their friendship grow as they realise how much they have in common.
The book rings with authenticity, which is no surprise, as Nussaibah Younis worked for several years advising the Iraqi government on proposed programs to deradicalise women affiliated with ISIS.
If you’re looking for a unique and thought-provoking novel that will also make you laugh (a rare combination), add this dazzling debut to your to-read pile!
