For lovers of reading, the place to be this autumn is the Cheltenham Literature Festival. Running from October 3 to 12, the programme includes more than 600 events, with subjects as diverse as history, politics, sport, food and fashion.

Among the star-studded cast of writers attending will be Salman Rushdie, Kazuo Ishiguro, Hilary Mantel, Ian McEwan, Margaret Atwood, Howard Jacobson, Michael Morpurgo, Joanna Trollope, Rose Tremain, Edward St Aubyn, Martin Amis, Caitlin Moran and Ruth Rendell.

Actors on stage will include Sheila Hancock and husband and wife team Damian Lewis and Helen McCrory, while political issues will be addressed by General Lord David Richards, Shami Chakrabarti, Doreen Lawrence, Frank Gardner and Naomi Klein.
