As well as being a singer and a TV personality, Alesha Dixon is an author of children’s books - and the latter is a role that was inspired by motherhood.

Sitting down for a cup of tea and a chat with GH before lockdown, Alesha spoke about how becoming a mum to daughters Azura, six, and Anaya, 10 months, made her want to create books for them and other children to enjoy.

“[Azura] is super proud of me at the moment and loving Star Switch, which is a new book of mine from a brand new series,” Alesha said.

What to read next

“My daughters basically inspired me to write books because I’m really conscious of the characters that they’re reading. When I look at the books that [Azura] brings home from school, I really want my daughter to feel represented and included.

“I created Aurora Beam and Lightning Girl in her honour, and due to the success of Lightning Girl, I was able to create Star Switch which is my brand new series about Naomi Star and Ruby who basically end up swapping bodies. It’s a bit like a modern take on Freaky Friday. So, [Azura’s] super interested in that one at the moment,” she said.

For Alesha, her books are all about instilling confidence and happiness into children’s lives.

“Always with my books, thinking about my girls, it’s about positive, strong messaging, about teamwork, friendship, kindness and really stepping into your own light and not trying to be like somebody else,” she said.

“I really love that my daughter keeps a copy of my book next to her bed and I think, deep down, she’s super proud.”
