Books I love... Jennifer Saunders

Ab Fab creator Jennifer has been making us laugh for nearly 40 years. She recounts some career landmarks in her memoir, Bonkers, out now in paperback. Here are her five all-time top reads.

The Noel Coward Diaries are witty and sophisticated. He doesn’t hold back on his opinions or in writing about who he really loathes and it’s full of great gossip. It’s a book I always revisit and quote from.

Postmortem is the Patricia Cornwell book that introduces Kay Scarpetta, her feisty medical examiner. What I love is that Patricia is a total expert in all things forensic so every detail rings true – plus, she’s fantastic at creating atmospheres.  

PG Wodehouse is by far my favourite writer. He just can’t be beaten for turn of phrase and proper laugh-out-loud comedy. It’s hard to choose one book but The Inimitable Jeeves encapsulates all that I love. 

In her day, Gloria Swanson was the most famous person on the planet. Swanson On Swanson, which describes her journey from silent screen to Sunset Boulevard, is one of the best autobiographies I’ve ever read. She wrote with great insight about herself. 

I was given How Betty Became Queen by B Evison when I had only just learnt to read and I became obsessed with it. It’s the story of a shy girl polar bear called Betty who lives in a land where the king chooses his wife in an ice-skating competition. Betty can’t skate but she eventually takes to the ice and wins. I can’t really explain why I love this book so much but it’s still an obsession.
