Anne Hathaway explains why she's giving up drinking for 18 years

Anne Hathaway has discussed the multiple reasons that drove her decision to give up drinking for the foreseeable future.

The 36-year-old actress said during an appearance on The Ellen Degeneres Show that hangovers felt inconducive with the early morning demands of her two-year-old son.

"I quit drinking back in October, for 18 years, I'm going to stop drinking while my son is in my house just because I don’t totally love the way I do it and he's getting to an age where he really does need me all the time in the mornings," the Oscar-winning star recounted.

"I did one school run one day where I dropped him off at school, I wasn’t driving, but I was hungover and that was enough for me. I didn't love that one."

Hathaway married Adam Schulman in 2012, and the couple welcomed their first child together in 2016.

The Ocean's 8 star also spoke about a big night out with McConaughey and his wife Camila Alves that she can barely remember while filming Serenity on the island of Mauritius.

"We drank the night away, and then I had to go to a meeting with Steven Knight, our director, the next day, and I was just kinda - have you guys ever had to go to a meeting hungover?" she asked the audience.

"I was just kinda stumbling in with one eye open and I was trying to convince him about certain things about my character."

She continued: "And at the end of it I said, 'Listen, I have a confession. I was hungover the entire time.' And he just goes, "Oh, really? I couldn't tell'.

"Then two days later we had another meeting and I showed up and said, 'Oh, now I can tell.'"

Hathaway stars opposite McConaughey in new thriller Serenity which follows the story the of a fishing boat captain whose mysterious life comes back to haunt him after his ex-wife tracks him down with a desperate plea for help. The movie is written and directed by Peaky Blinders creator Steven Knight.
